Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• The National Tyre Distributors' Association (NTDA) has launched an Approved Tyre Repairer Scheme and published a poster giving the relevant changes in the latest BS specification.

BSAL:159d could become a legal standard for tyre repair in April next year. It creates two categories of repair: major and minor.

Minor repairs can be carried out at tyre depots and are classified by damage in the tread area of less than lOmm in the case of cv tyres and 6mm for those on a van/car. Repairs on the shoulders of tyres are no longer allowed.

All tyres must be removed from the rims and a plug used in the hole in addition to a patch on the inside. This can be done by using a mushroom-shaped plug-patch or by using separate plugs.

Major repairs consist of damage larger than specified above and must be repaired by a specialist repairer. All tyres so repaired must carry a marking to that effect on the outside of the casing.

To cater for the major class of repairs the NTDA has set up an Approved Tyre Repairer scheme. To be approved as a member the repairer must carry out work to the new BS standard and have product liability insurance cover of Lim per claim.

The NTDA has also published a wall chart giving the changes in allowable repairs. Copies of the chart are available free of charge to anyone who repairs tyres and can he obtained from the NTDA on (0296) 395933.
