(Tours) Ltd. and Yelloway Motor Services Ltd., the North Western Traffic Commissioners granted one of the applications before them in principle, at Manchester on Monday. Mr. J. Backhouse, for Ellen Smiths, said that they had been operating a one-day excursion to London for one year on an experimental basis, and on the occasions it had been offered there had been substantial loading, which showed there Was a demand. Ellen Smiths now wanted to operate this as an ordinary excursion and did not Wish to be tied to specified dates, said Mr. Backhouse. Yelloway Motor Services opposed this application and lodged a similar one themselves.

In evidence, Mr. H. Allen, general manager of Yelloway; said that the company wanted to operate a day excursion to London. At present, if people wished to travel there and back in one day, they would have to spend one journey travel. ling through the night. If Ellen Smiths would accept a limitation of 30 vehicle journeys for one year, he said,. the times of operation being left to their own discretion, Yelloway would be satisfied if they were allowed to do a similar thing. ?after a brief adjournment, Mr. F. D. Walker, for Yelloway, stated that the two parties had agreed unon the 30-vehicle journey limitation, but Ellen Smiths would apply to vary their licence by picking un at Castleton. Yelloway would be applying for the London excursion with 15 vehicle journeys on their two London licences and Ellen Smiths would not object.

The Ellen Smiths' application was granted in principle.

At the same hearing, an application by Yelloway Motor Services to extend various night services from Blackpool to London, via Manchester, was adjourned by the Commissioners while the objectors, the North Western Road Car Co. Ltd., produced traffic figures for the Manchester area.
