'THERE are a number of substantial I applications this week, the largest of which appears in the South Wales "As and Ds." Hawthornt Transportation and Freight Lines. Ltd., of Nelson (Glamorgan) seek authority to transfer 17 art. and two flat vehicles from contract A to a B licence, to carry aluminium, paper, etc., for British Aluminium Co., Ltd., and Monmouthshire Board Mills, Ltd., over a wide radius.

In the North West 11.R.S. (Contracts); Ltd. (with a base at Stalybridge), wish to convert 18 vehicles, totalling 65 tons unladen weight, from contract A licence to B licence. On the face of the published application, this appears to be a substan

tial in facilities. The contract vehicles are restricted to the carriage of goods for K. A. Pattreiouex, Ltd., of Ashton-under-Lyme, who are described as cigarette manufacturers. If the application is successful B.R.S. (Contracts) will be able to carry tobacco and cigarettes "on behalf of Gallagher, Ltd., and associated companies as required.." The published application does not, unfortunately, give the names, or even the number, of the associated companies.

In the East Midland area, the Union Cartage Co., Ltd., the London meat haulage concern, wish to transfer 10 vehicles and containers from the Metropolitan Area. They seek an A licence with the user "meat, foodstuffs and some general goods, mainly within 200 miles." The vehicles will be based at Grimsby, if the application is successful.

Two B to A " switches " appear in the Eastern and Metropolitan publications. W. Carter, of Melton, in Suffolk, want to vary their A licence by the addition of 15 vehicles, which will be taken off B licence, while Task Haulage, Ltd., of Uxbridge, seek to place seven vehicles on a new A licence with a "General goods, London, Home Counties and Midlands" user. If this is granted, they undertake to surrender a B licence under which they carry salt for certain named customers within a restricted radius.
