Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

With reference to the article "Continental lorry inquiry urged" (CM October 5), it would appear to me that Mr Ray Carter MP has overlooked one major point. How can he expect Continental vehicles to be kept within the laws, on international journeys, when our own vehicles are not abiding even our own laws regarding international journeys?

An international journey is defined as:— Any journey, including that part within the United Kingdom, when the driver or vehicle is going or has been, outside the United Kingdom.

I have been informed by an official at the Department of Environment headquarters that a driver who takes a loaded trailer and drops it at a port to be shipped, or indeed collects one off a boat is restricted to international drivers' hours for the rest of that working week.

It would appear that the powers who are supposed to enforce these Regulations, are either not aware of them, or are grossly overlooking them.

Let's get it tidier this side of the Channel first.
