A PPLICATION by Stockport

poration to increase revenue by varying their fare structure, on which decision has been reserved since March, was withdrawn at the resumed hearing by the North Western Traffic Commissioners at Bolton on Tuesday, after Mr. F. Williamson, chairman, had pointed out that the original publication of fare schedules was now defective.

Commenting on the effects of applications by joint operators on through routes, after being told that fares on the joint Manchester—Hazel Grove service went up from Ild. to Is. as a result of Manchester's increases, and on the new Stockport schedule would now be Is. Id., Mr. WilliamsOn said that the commissioners had given serious thought to the question and when considering increases would much prefer to regard jointly operated services as one through route.

A representative of Manchester Corporation said they had not agreed to any fare increase on this service.

On the question of road reinstatement, the Commissioners were told that part of the payments were made to the highways department for extraordinary use of minor roads by buses.

Referring to figures of £11,000 and £7,950 for 1954 and 1956 respectively, Mr. Williamson said the Commissioners had riot been aware that payments were made for road reinstatement other than those for statutory liability of replacement of tramway tracks. They would require figures of amounts and dates during the last 10 to 15 years of payments for the highways not under statutory liability.

Mr. D. W. Hay, for Stockport, asked permission , to withdraw and start again. There would be great difficulty in putting the increases into effect on only their own services. In addition to the mix-up, there was to he taken into consideration £1,100 additional fuel cost and a possible wage increase of £36,000 a year for platform staff.

Mr. Williamson agreed.
