THREE of the four Seddon Atkinson models at Kelvin Hall are being exhibited for the first time. All have been developed in the last year.

Seddon Atkinson's latest 16tonner has more torque and slightly less weight. The new 201 model is powered by the Perkins T6.3544 turbocharged and charge-cooled engine developing 111kW (148bhp) at 2,600rpm and torque of 486Nm (358Ibft) at 1,600rpm.

The new variant is primarily designed for long-distance work and complements the existing 0.358-engined version, which is better suited for short and medium distance urban delivery operations. Many detail changes and modifications have been made to accommodate the Perkins engine.

In place of the Eaton twospeed rear axle in the existing D358-engined model the Perkins version has the Eaton singlespeed axle as standard and the two-speed as an option.

The clutch is now hydraulically operated and has a 356mm (14in) diameter plate. The prop shaft, too, has been uprated.

In the engine compartment, extensive plumbing alterations were needed to fit in the turbocharger, the air-to-air type charge-cooler and larger radiator. The 301 6x4 rigid was introduced in May with a derated version of the Cummins L10 engine producing 157kW (211bhp) at 2,200rpm and torque of 843Nm (662 lbft). Standard gearbox is the RTX 6609 nine-speed constant mesh Fuller.

The Seddon Atkinson 301 model with Cummins L10 engine is still claimed to be Europe's lightest twin steer tractive unit at 6.33 tonnes kerbweight and the 401 model on the stand runs it close with the RollsRoyce 290 unit at 6.63 tonnes, while the Cummins 290 powered version is only 10kg (22 lb) more.

Standard day cab models with normal running gear, fifth wheel and fully fuelled, are under seven tonnes. Alloy wheels can save up to 160kg (350 lb) more.

Both the 301 and 401 models utilise a stretched version of the 301 4x2 tractor chassis frame. The 301 model has the Spicer SST 8010-4B 10-speed gearbox with splitter while the 401 models utilise the Fuller RTX11609A nine-speed with airoperated range change.

The variation in weights between models is almost entirely due to the engines and the different cab heights.

With the exception of the second steering axle and its associated equipment all components are common to current Seddon Atkinson 4x2 tractor models.
