THE cost of the Government's road programme in England in 1969-70 will be £238m. instead of the £215m. envisaged up to now.

But the Minister of Transport, who announced this new figure last week, explained that it had been reached by adjusting the cost levels to those of 1964 instead of the 1962 terms on which it had been based up to now. This had been done following a detailed analysis of 1964 road contracts and an assessment of rises in land costs.

In 1969-70 local authorities would find from their own resources some 142m., representing their share of the cost of the work on classified roads, added Mr. Fraser. This would bring total public investment on the road programme that year up to 1280m.

The new level of £238m. for Exchequer expenditure in. 1969-70 compared with 1132m. for the current year. went on the Minister. The spending planned for the years between now and 1969-70 woulc also be increased, but in the short-term— particularly in the current year and ir 1966-67--expenditure would be affectec by the measures to defer by six month! the start of certain road schemes.

Expenditure on the road programme for 1970-71 would be announced flex' summer, said Mr. Fraser, and at the same time there would be provisional figure' for a further spread of years beyond This was part of a new procedure whereby the figures for roads expenditure announced each summer would cover the following four financial years instead of five, but would he coupled with planning indications for a further spread of yean beyond this.

Announcements of schemes to be added to the programme for the perioe up to 1969-70 would be made soon added the Minister, and for schemes ur to 1970-71 by the autumn of 1966 in the light of the new financial programme..
