FROM A SPECIAL CORRESPONDENT

B"AUSE of the success of the first survey of comparative efficiency among bulk liquid hauliers, E understand it has been decided to continue the scheme on an annual. basis. Other firms are to he encouraged to take part (with the relatively few at present in the scheme the cost is higher than it could be) and those who are interested are advised to contact the head office of the Road Haulage Association.

The seven companies in the RHA bulk liquid group which took part in the s2heme were Crow Carrying, James Hemphill. Midland Road Tank. Services, Road Services (Caledonian), Pointer Tanker Services, Tyburn Road Tank Services, and Harold Wood and Sons. These participants provided information from which the Centre for Intel-firm Comparison Ltd. calculated, inter (Ilia, their use of assets and, where possible, the relative efficiency of each section of their business and their overall profitability.

The Centre has reported that, there was a wide range between the performances of the most and least efficient companies taking part but that no firm could claim to be the most efficient in all respects and therefore incapable of improvement.

At a recent meeting of the hulk liquids functional group one member said that the final report was of great value as it had highlighted faults in his organitation and he thought the scheme well .vorth the cOst f£100). He wa5 supported in this by .another member present and by the chairman. .

Part of the success of the scheme derives from the fact that the identity of the companies is not divulged in relation to the results, so that anonymity is maintained.
