Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

D OAD haulage and dock representa tives fives were present at a preliminary meeting held recently at Powell Duffryn House to consider the possibility of a national pallet pool in this country. Also, if formed, whether or not it would extend to include the European pallet pool, and to consider the machinery of such a pool.

It was explained to the meeting that the main problem was the administration of the pool rather than the size and specification of pallets. On the Continent the pool was dominated by the railways, which had virtually decided on a size of 32 in. by 48 in. Many members present doubted whether such a size would be suitable in this country and 40 in. by 48 in. was advocated.

Other considerations noted in connec tion with the size of the pallet were the possibility of the UK joining the Common Market and the significance of export traffic to Europe, which would exert a strong case on the adoption of a standard size. The general opinion appeared to be that if a complete national pool was not practical, then there was good scope for individual industries operating their own pools. The frozen food trade already operated its own pool and this might provide good ground for extension into the food manufacturing trade and allied activities.

Finally it was agreed that other interests not represented should be invited to submit their views and that a further meeting with possibly a broader basis of representation should be convened on November 15.
