Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

Stand 104—Scammell Lorries Ltd., Watford, Hems.

THERE are two main items of interest I on this stand—the Scammell Trunker II twin-steer tractive unit and a 34 ft.-long example of one of the new Scammell range of semi-trailers which was announced on October 29. A third exhibit is a Routeman II rigid eightwheeler with a special van body.

Dealing with the latest introduction first, the tandem-axle semi-trailer is 34 ft.'Ong and weighs about 4 tons 10 cwt. The exhibit has Scammell trailing-arm rubber suspension, but Scammell air suspension —which uses the same trailing arms .and so on—is an option and so is the Rubery Owen four-leaf-spring system. In the last case Rubery Owen 20,000 lb. axles are used. A feature of the semi-trailer design is that the main longitudinals are 16.5 in by 5-5 in. I-section mild steel beams and full-width 4 in. by 2.5 in. 1-section crossmembers go through them. The frame is of all-welded construction.

Whilst the new Scammell semi-trailer range provides for gross train weights of up to 30 tons, the Scammell Trunker Mk. H is designed for use at 32 tons g.t.w. The second steering axle is located close to the driving •axle and has combine4 air-and-leaf-spring suspension.

Single-leaf springs have air bellows at. their centres in which pressure is maintained at 70 p.s.i. for normal running, but in adverse conditions improved adhesion can be obtained by releasing the air and so transferring the weight to the driving axle. The cab on the Thinker II is to the same general design as that on the. Routeman, but to reduce the front overhang it is set back over the front axle.

The engine fitted in the Trunker is a Leyland Power Plus 0_680, 200.b.h.p. diesel, but for the Routeman II this-unit is derated to 185 The boxvan body. fitted to the Routeman on the Scammell Stand is of light alloy and was built by Bonaliack. Interior'length is 24 ft. 6 in.
