Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

Stand 106—Ritchies Ltd., Glasgow C2. Stand 11I—John Gibson and Son Ltd., Edinburgh II.

THE four Guy vehicles exhibited on these two stands are all four-wheel tractive units for operation at up to 32 tons gross train weight, although the practical limit with the existing Construction and Use Regulations will be 30 tons. Three of the chassis are shown by Ritchies:—two of the latest Big .1 models and an Invincible Mk. III—whilst John Gibson is also featuring a Big J, to a similar specification as one of those on the Ritchies' stand.

In general the two Big J tractive units on the Ritchies stand have the same specification. The main difference is that one has a Cummins V6 200 engine, whilst the other, has a Gardner 6LX. The Cummins produces 192 b.h.p. net at 2,600 r.p.m. compared with the 150 b.h.p. at 1,700 r.p.m. for the Gardner, and both drive through a six-speed constant-mesh gearbox with overdrive top. These two models have the 'Guy cab which can be tilted forward for work on the engine only when the Cummins V engine is fitted. Even then a good deal of work has to be done on removing parts.

The Invincible Mk. III tractive unit has a Cummins NHE 180. This is the model which was added to the Guy standard range in the middle of this year for operation at a gross train weight of 30 or 32 tons. The Cummins engine produces 180 b.h.p. gross at 1,950 r.p.m. and is used instead of the Gardner 6LX as in other Invincible Mk. III models. As against a wheelbase of 7 ft. 9 in. for the Big J, the Invincible has an 8 ft. 6 in. wheelbase, but the gearbox is also a six-speed overdrive unit.

The Guy Big J featured by John Gibson has a Cummins V6 200 engine and is similar in specification to the model with this unit shown by Ritchies.
