Stand 97—Atkinson Vehicles Ltd., Preston, Lancs.

'I-HE three vehicles displayed on this

stand are all designed for operation at the new, increased gross vehicle weights. Two are tractive units--one for 30 tons g.t.w., thefl other 28 tons—whilst the third is a 22-ton-gross six-wheeler.

The 30-ton tractive unit is a T3046C two-axle, 9 ft. 6 in. wheelbase model, and is powered by a Cummins 'NHE 180 six-cylinder diesel engine with a rating of 173 b.h.p. at 1,950 r.p.m. Transmission is through an 18 in.-diameter clutch arid

a six-speed overdrive gearbox, the overdrive ratio being 0.72 to 1; bottom gear is 6-44 to 1. A feature of this chassis is •that twin 54 gal, fuel tanks are fitted, one on each side of the chassis.

The second tractive unit is a T2846X 9 ft 6 in wheelbase model which has a Gardner 6LX 150 b.h.p. engine. The gearbox is a David Brown 10-speed, constant-mesh splitter type with an overdrive ratio of 0.76 to 1 and a bottom gear of 7-95 to I.

Both tractive units have the same design of braking system, with two-line air-pressure operation of separate circuits for the front and rear axles. A third line is provided for the semi-trailer, this being actuated by a pull-valve in the mechanical linkage to the tractive unit rear axle on the first stroke of the multi

pull handbrake. This system has, in fact, now been superseded by Atkinson with one where the secondary braking is controlled by a hand-reaction valve fitted on the steering column; this operates on the tractive unit front axle through the secondary side of dual-diaphragm chambers and at the same time supplies air pressure to the third line for the semitrailer. Short supply of parts prevented the Show exhibits having the latest system.

A Gardner 6LX engine is also fitted in the 22-ton-gross six-wheeler. This is an L2266X with a wheelbase of 17ft. 8-25 in. Transmission in this case is through a David Brown six-speed overdrive gearbox with a top ratio of 0.72 to 1 and a bottom ratio of 6-61 to I. Steering is through a 2F worm-and-nut unit with hydraulic power assistance. All three Show exhibits have Atkinson coach-built dc luxe cabs.

The FJ 8-tonner exhibited by Taggarts on Stand 130 is worth inspection as -it has a York -third-axle conversion and a timber, coil-carrying platform body. It is fitted with a 5.7-litre diesel, five-speed overdrive gearbox and BMC two-speed axle. With it on the same stand is an FG 5-tonner which has a special tipper body, 13 ft. 7 in. long by 7 ft. 6 in. wide by I ft. 8 in. high.
