£0.25m campaign

STRATHCLYDE Regional Council keting campaign to promote its public over the next 12 months.

The campaign will use local media to advertise the services provided by Strathclyde Transport, including SPTE, Scottish Bus Group and British Rail.

Malcolm Waugh, chairman of the region's highways and transportation committee issued a. "use it or lose it" plea to potential passengers. Strathclyde has seen a drop of almost 35 per cent in passengers over the last 10 years from 500m a year to around 330m, caused by a movement in the population away from Glasgow, an improved highway network and high unemployment.

However, the council believes the decline in the number of passengers has stopped and it now hopes to win them back by creating public awareness of the services and through special fare offers.

Launching the promotional campaign in Glasgow on the eve of the local government elections, ClIr Waugh said: "I am of the opinion that as well as a fast, smooth, efficient service, we must give some financial as sistance; for example, cut price family day away giving the opportunity for people to take and make use of public transport."

He added: "In order in future to hold fares level or even to reduce them we must attract more revenue to public transport."

Strathclyde Regional Council will spend around E72m this year, supporting its public transport services.
