THE GOVERNMENT hopes to introduce regulations later this year to provide a statutory scheme in place of the existing voluntary one for the marking of road tanker vehicles.

Announcing this in the Commons, Mr. John Horam, Under Secretary for Transport, added that work was also proceeding on the preparation of comprehensive general regulations covering the conveyance of dangerous goods by road.

First commercials GP

SEVENTY-TWO drivers will take part tomorrow (May 13) in an ERF commercial vehicle grand prix at Oulton Park racing circuit, Tarporley, Cheshire.

Leyland PO specials

THE POST Office has placed an order worth £31/2m with Leyland Vehicles for postal delivery vans. They will be built by the company's Scottish-based Medium / Light Division.

The GPO requires 671 Leyland EA panel vans, which will be modified to Post Office specifications with internal bulkheads, special locks, rear roller shutter door, and other equipment.

Heathrow Irish

ONE OF Ireland's oldest shipping and transport companies, Lawther and Harvey Ltd, has opened an air freight and forwarding office at London Heathrow Airport.

The new division — Speedair Air Freight — is managed by Maurice Hart.
