DRIVERS and operators have found that the tachograph was not as bad as they feared, and operators in particular are fast discovering the advantages it offers for better efficiency, said Transport Under Secretary Lynda Chalker at the opening of an extension of Foster (Tachographs) in Preston last week.
"Tachographs became compulsory in commercial vehicles last December, and the fears about its introduction expressed by many drivers have proved groundless as they have become familiar with the device," Mrs Chalker said.
Many operators, particularly large ones, have realised that the tachograph has helped them in better management of their vehicles.
The detailed record produced by the tachograph can help them use their vehicles and crews "more efficiently, identify uneconomic routes, and plan better ones, conserve fuel, in short — run their businesses more economically," Mrs Chalker pointed out.
The Government wants to see Britain's transport industry as efficient and competitive as possible, she said. Professional tachograph analysis services were welcomed by it.
