('NE OF THE best-known types of 10 British road rollers which is largely used by municipal authorities and road contractors for various work in connection with the maintenance and reconstruction • of highways is the Robey special tandem steam-roller produced by Robey and Co., Ltd., Lincoln.
This roller, of which we reproduce an illustration herewith, is made in sizes varying from 5 to 8 tons, and is particularly suitable for use on all forms of road surfacing. .
One of the outstanding advantages of the roller is its instantaneon.3 reverse, which, in conjunction with the chain drive, obviates any tendency of the roller to leave waves in the. road surface when reversing, a perfectly level and smooth surface being obtained without any of the irregular ridging which is sometimes produced by an ordinary type of roller.
So far as its constructional features are concerned, the design of the roller is of the overtype pattern, a compound horizontal-type engine with side-by-side cylinders being fixed on the top of a. locomotive-type boiler with a round firebox and no stays, which obviates !daily troubles often experienced with Whirs of this typeIt has a large heating surface and grate area, and its working pressure is 200 lb. per sq. in., although it is tested to a pressure of double that amount.
. A capacious water tank is provided, and this is suspended below the boiler. The I-Otters are of tough cast-iron, and the hind rims can readily be renewed, being, a3 they are, bolted to the centre
plates. The front roller is made in four sections in order to secure easy steering. The fore and aft rollers are Atted with adjustable steel scrapers. Other outstanding detaiis of the roller can be seen from the illustration of ri machine delivered to the Lincoln Corporation.
