A COUNTY DURHAM tipper and plant-hire firm says it is in discussion with the local council about reversing a decision to refuse it permission to expand into new premises.
Teward Bros in Darlington has been told by Teesdale District Council that its application to move its haulage business, including 33 employees and 16 LGVs, to a farm in the village of Staindrop constitutes "unnecessary and inappropriate development in the countryside".
But the decision could have a disastrous effect on the firm's employees Jeffrey Teward has told the local press his business will not survive another year at its current location.
Teward Bros' application to move its operations from two sites in Co Durham to just one at Jeffrey's home in Staindrop was backed by a rural planning consultancy.
It told the council that the move would result in a saving of at least 63,440 haulage road miles per year and would relieve noise and congestion in several villages.
However, Natural England raised concerns over the impact to local wildlife populations, including bats, otters, water voles and crayfish.
Durham County Council also recommended that the application was rejected.
Teward says he should be in a better position to comment in a fortnight after the decision has been discussed with the council.
