A HATFIELD MAN has been jailed for two months for dumping drums full of lethal chemicals in a Hertfordshire field, causing a major incident which cost emergency services £30,000 to clean up.

John Hibbert, of Stockbreach Close, Hatfield pleaded guilty to dumping four containers of hazardous waste on Codicote Road, Wheathamstead in June 2002.

StAlbans magistrates heard that Hibbert admitted to fly-tipping when he appeared as a witness for John Scott, who was prosecuted last September for allowing his truck to be used for the fly-tip. The court heard that a member of a local walking club was driving along Codicote Road when he spotted 14 dumped containers, The witness parked his car at a gateway but a man told him he couldn't park there. The witness became suspicious and drove a short distance before returning to the spot on foot where he saw the same man open the gate for the truck to drive in. After it drove off the witness noticed that four more containers had been dumped.

The chemicals, included diesel oil and sulphuric acid, had seeped into the ground and had to be dug out;this took two weeks.

Environment officer Brian Leighton says: "This episode showed a blatant disregard for human safety and the environment in favour of financial gain. The fact that the magistrates imposed a custodial sentence indicates the severity of this incident."

• Lynx Express has been fined £2,000 with £912 costs after a boiler house leaked, polluting part of the River Lostock in Lancashire. Although Lynx had turned off the supply and hosed down its yard it had no oil interceptor in place in its drainage system.
