FACED with the prospect of losing £48,000 a year if the racial-segregation policy is imposed upon the carrying of bus passengers, Pietermaritzburg City Council, South Africa, who operate a bus undertaking, are challenging the legality of apartheid.
The Road Transportation Board have been told by the council that apartheid . is illegal, and that if it is enforced the case will be taken before the Supreme Court. If the Court upheld apartheid. the council would 'give notice to cease running the buses.
Durban buses may lose up to £250.000 this year because of segregation.
