Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

AMONG the more unusual types of commercial vehicles is one which has been developed in America for the digging and setting of telegraph poles. Used largely both in the. United States and Canada, it also presents certain possibilities for service in this country. The outfit is based on a lorry chassis, and a double train of gears, each actuated through a multiple-disc clutch and brake, serves to rotate a large earth-boring auger at the rear of the vehicle and to impart the feed, forcing the auger into the earth while rotating, as well as withdrawing it on reaching the required depth.

The boring head is equipped with levelling mechanism to permit of quick adjustment, so that holes can be dug irrespective of the position of the lorry on sloping ground, or at an angle to the lorry for anchor holes. Power is applied to the levelling mechanism which raises the auger from the travelling (or horizontal) position to the working (or vertical) position.

A pole-lifting derrick and winch can also be combined with the earth-boring outfit to handle poles up to 45 ft. long.

Power is supplied to the earth-boring unit by the vehicle engine through a propeller shaft power take-off. The control levers are arranged so that the operator stands on the lorry platform, with easy access to the power-aligning device and a clear view of the auger. The digging controls are always in neutral position until pressure is applied, and the operator can stop the digging operation at any time by merely opening his hands, thus releasing the levers by which they are actuated.

A 20-in, diameter hole 10 ft. deep can be dug in less than three minutes, and when there are two operators the outfit will dig holes and set about 100 poles per working day of eight hours. The overall length of the earth-boring machine (including overhang) is 12 ft. Maximum overall height from the platform is 17 ft. 6 ins. Space required on the platform is 8 ft. 4 ins. by 2 ft. 10 ins., and the weight, with winch, is 21 tons.

The unit is secured to the lorry platform by eight U-bolts and may quickly be removed. The maker is the Highway Trailer Co., Edgerton, U.S.A.
