TN THE administrative report/on the 'working of the Nigerian Railway for the year ending March 31st last, some interesting facts and figures are given relating to the motor transport department, which is directed by Mr. F. S. Browning, who, incidentally, states that the total working expenditure for the period named amounted to 218,663, or 30.52d. per mile, which shows a decrease of 1.04d. per mile in comparison with the figures for 1922-23. This expenditure includes cost of three new Albion vans and trailers.

The cost of fuel per mile worked out. at 4.92d., which shows a decrease of B40

.02d. per mile compared with last year while the maintenance costs of the vehicles have been reduced from 6.77d. per mile last year to 4.02d. this year. Mr. Browning goes on to say that the total mileage covered by the vehicles for the year was146,399, being roughly 25,000 miles in excess of the figure for last year. The average mileage covered per vehicle during the 12 months was 6,971, equal to 49.09 milet per working day. There has been a total increase in the amount of freight carried by 1,090 tons as compared with the quantity dealt with during the same period of last year, the freight rates this year are considerably lower, so that for every ton-mile the consignor paid 16d. during the year under review compared with 20d. last year. The Northern Services of the company are proving to be beneficial, there being little competition there. Many of the aiming companies rely entirely on their services for the transport of their machinery and f-n, and it is just possible that much coal will be carried in the near future for the use of steam dredges an some of-the mines. Traffic, therefore, is likely to increase in this direction.
