A hydrodynamic retarder Efers several advantages, the rain one being that it is wearee as fluid is the working iedium and it has a high aecific performance. Since 1975, Voith Engineering has successfully marketed a range of automatic transmission hydrodynamic retarders for the PSV industry. There are now well over 5,000 such units in service in the UK and by a far majority represents the automatic transmission incorporating a retarder for the PSV market.

The hydrodynamic retarder does not impose such heavy loads on the lubricant as there is no clutch slip that occurs in transmissions where retarder effect is obtained by engaging two or more gears at one.

For a given vehicle weight and desired degree of retardation, the amount of energy to be dissipated (in the form of heat) will obviously be the same.

The high-speed inter-city coach does present a different set of problems to the stop/start of the city bus operation.

In order to meet route timing, this high-speed coach spends the majority of its life in one or two gear ratios with the engine working at near maximum horsepower, as opposed to maximum torque for the city bus operation.

One question we would pose to Mr Kelbourne is: could a synthetic oil meet the muchrequested requirement by operators for a common automatic transmission fluid?
