• Leyland Trucks is ready to produce its continuously variable transmission (CVT) system as soon as the market shows that it is ready.
The company claims to be world leader in the CVT principle and could apply it to the complete range of commercial vehicles within two years once the decision has been made to go into production.
Brian Smith, national sales director said last week: In addition to saving on clutch wear, its main advantage is that it gives a reduction in fuel consumption of about 15 per cent."
The transmission allows the engine to operate at a constant speed, usually just below that needed to obtain maximum torque, corresponding to the lowest point of its specific fuel consumption curve.
Further development of high powered engines, to be used in conjunction with high gearing, will also allow the best use to be made of engine torque in order to save fuel, he said.
