Nightfreight faces IC over one errant driver. Mike Jewell reports.

PARCELS FIRM Nightfreight (UK) has been hauled in front of Traffic Commissioner Geoffrey Simms thanks to a rule-breaking driver.

Traffic examiner Caroline Hicks said that when she visited the company's site in July she examined tachograph charts belonging to driver Dougie Corbin. which revealed a string of drivers' hours offences.

But Hicks added that she had provided a training course for the company's drivers at its invitation and confirmed that the company was making every effort to ensure there were no further problems.

Regional director Ian Lucas explained that while the weekly tachograph analysis reports made it clear that Corbin was committing offences, local management had felt that he would change his ways through education and encouragement. He conceded that the process had taken too long.

The TC was also being asked to lift an earlier curtailment of Nightfreight's eastern area licence from 80 vehicles and 50 trailers to 55 vehicles and 40 trailers and to increase the authorisation by seven vehicles.

Simms sustained the curtailment for three months. But he added that there had been no sinister motive or encouragement of Corbin to commit offences; it was a question of weak management.
