A Milshaw Hydraulic Type Now Ready for Production After Six Months of Practical Tests

HAVING completed six months' trial of an hydraulic, tipping gear, the Milshaw Tipping Gear Co., Birch Lane Works, Rooley Lane, Bradford, is shortly to place an entirely new pattern on the market. Although of the telescopic type, it adds nothing to the overall height of the body when tipped, an important feature when working in restricted spaces.

The test model, we are informed, has been in constant use for the period mentioned, dealing with loads up to 7/1 tons, and, during that time, there has never been need for oil replenishment or for maintenance work.

The telescopic action is limited to a single-stage lift. In the circumstances, it is possible to utilize ram members of specially strong construction, whilst, as the necessary tank capacity is smaller, the gear may more easily be fitted in awkward positions. Only one gland leather has to be maintained and the weight is moderate.

The single-lift ram is mounted just behind the driver's cab, and, fixed around the ram, upon which it slides, is a ring attached to the base of the body. To the body side of the ring is anchored a chain, which passes upwards and over a shrouded pulley, the other end of the chain being attached to a steel strut that links with the chassis immediately in front of the ram. The action oi the ram in moving upwards causes the chain to run over the pulley and this simple, ingenious arrangement results in the body being lilted at twice the rate of movement of the lifting member.

It was noted by a representative of The Commercial Motor that a 7-ton load was cleared within 27 seconds. The gear appeared to give every satisfaction under working conditions, and has shown itself well able to withstand strenuous usage.

The new model, power-driven from the gearbox and for end tipping, will

be made in sizes suitable for all chassis from 2 tons to the largest capacities. The amount of space required between the cab and the body on the model inspected was 10 ins., but this dimension will be reduced in the lighter models. A universal action compensates for body distortion.

The factory is not yet in full production of this model, but prices, which, we understand, will be reasonable, are shortly to be fixed. Inquiries may be addressed to the manufacturer, or to the distributor, C. C. Nott and Co., 8, Gordon House, Carrington Street, Nottingham.
