New truck sates continue healthy trend, says SMMT

TRUCK REGISTRATIONS were robust last month, according to the latest data from the SMMT.

There were 2,788 heavy truck registrations (over 6 tonnes) in October, up 123.4% on the same month in 2009. However, registrations in October 2009 were affected by dealers and operators rushing to register trucks before the Euro-5 RPC deadline at the end of September 2009, leading to just 1,248 registrations.

Tony Pain, marketing director of DAF Trucks, says October 2010 represents a more normal month for registrations.

Heavy truck registrations now stand at 21,631 in the year to date, down just 12.6% on 2009. Only two European truck manufacturers have posted an increase in registrations this year — Renault Trucks and Scania.

The French manufacturer is up 27.6% to 1,630 units, which is a 7.5% marketshare, up 2.1 percentage points. Nigel Butler. commercial director, says the company has enjoyed success in several markets. especially the rental sector.

Scania is up 12.9% this year to 2,906 units, and has struck several notable deals with Eddie Stobart, AW Jenkinson and Asda.

The van market up to 3.5 tonnes continues to enjoy success with October 2010 up 22.4% to 18,147 units, and the year-to-date numbers rising to 186,701.
