Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

AT the 40th Scottish Motor Exhibition, which opens at Kelvin Halt, Glasgow, today, there are over 150 commercial vehicles comprising 27 different makes. As is usual, the bulk of the 57 stands displaying vehicles will be occupied by distributors, makers' stands numbering only nine.

A number of new models and modified versions of popular chassis are to be seen, including three Thornycroft models—the Swiftsure 6-6k-ton goods chassis, an eightwheeler for 24-ton gross loads and a tractor version of the Trident.

The Daimler lightweight doubledecker is to be seen with reduced overall height, and Albion are exhibiting the Nimbus, a new passenger chassis of exceptionally low weight. There are two new ranges of Commer vehicle, and Dennis have a new 3-tonner in the Heron.

Guy have a Meadows-engined version of the Big Otter and there is a Jen-Tug powered by an Austin MO engine; also there is a MorrisCommercial 7-ton tractor fitted with quick-coupling gear.

Brockhouse are demonstrating their new quick-coupling gear (The Commercial Motor, October 28).

A quick guide to the accessory and component stands is given on pages 451-454. Items that are being shown to the public for the first time are also described.'

A.E.C.

Stand 98—A .E.C., Ltd., Southall, Middx.

Stand 123—Walter Alexander and Co. (Coachbuilders), Ltd., 53 Drip Road, Stirling. ON the stand of A.C.V. Sales, Ltd., is a Reliance chassis with a Park Royal 45-seat all-metal body and a Mercury tipper fitted with a Park Royal cab. The body on the Reliance is of the latest metal-framed design, incorporating extruded light-alloy sections throughout the frame structure. Lightalloy stress panels, fitted internally up to waist level, add to the strength of the body structure.

The single front entrance has a driver-controlled door operated by Arens lever mechanism. The seats are trimmed in moquette and vynide over

Dunlopillo .cushions and Ilairlok-filled squabs.

The interior of the body is trimmed with imitation leather—green up to the parcels rack and with cream rexine above and on the underside of the parcels rack. Enamelled ivory finish is employed on the centre of the roof. An A.E.C. six-cylindered directinjection horizontal oil engine of 112 b.h.p. is fitted in the Reliance chassis, which has a five-speed synchromesh gearbox, spiral-bevel rear axle and vacuum-servo brakes.

The gross vehicle weight . of the Mercury is 12 tons. It has a similar engine to that fitted in the Reliance, except that it has C.A.V. injection equipment, whereas the Reliance has Simms equipinent.

A second Reliance, with a 30-seat luxury coach body built by the exhibitors, appears on Alexander's stand. Here, again, light alloys are. extensively used, the form of construction adopted affording great strength with light weight. As the vehicle is to be operated on night runs between London and Edinburgh, a fully equipped toilet compartment is provided at the rear.

'THE centre of attraction on the 1 Albion stand is the new Nimbus underfloor-engined passenger vehicle, which is shown as a 31-seat bus suitable for one-man operation. It has a wheelbase of 11 ft. 10 in., an overall chassis length of 22 ft. 9 in and an overall length of 23 ft. 2 in. It will take an 8-ft.-wide body.

As shown, the Nimbus has a lighteighC all-metal body with a jack-knife door forward of the front wheels and an emergency exit at the centre on the off side. A road-test report appears on pages 412-415.

An Albion 60 b.h.p. horizontal oil engine, similar to that employed in the Nimbus, is fitted in the Claymore, which is shown in chassis form. This model has a payload capacity of 3 tons and is suitable for a. body up to 13 ft. 9 in. long inside, Also shown in chassis form is• one of the Clydesdale 'range designed for a gross vehicle weight of 14 tons., Millburn Motors, Ltd. are showing two Albion vehicles—a Chieftain and a Clydesdale—both having tipping bodies.

An Albion Cairn 30-35-cwt. chassis with lorry body appears on the stand of H. Havelock, Ltd., whilst A. C. Penman, Ltd., have a Chieftain chassis fitted with a Penman plastics cab and light-alloy platform body. This vehicle can operate at 30 m.p.h. with a 64-ton payload.

Atkinson

Stand 120--John Mitchell of Greenock, Ltd., Glebe Motor Works, Gray Place, Greenock.

THE Atkinson model shown by this distributor is the L.745LE, a fourwheeler having an unladen weight of 4 tons 9 cwt. 3 qr. It is powered by a Gardner 5LW direct-injection oil engine producing 94 bhp. at 1,700 r.p.m. A maximum torque of 300 lb.-ft. is developed at 1,300 r.p.m. A 16-in. single-plate clutch takes the drive to a David Brown 557 five-speed gearbox, an Eaton type-16500 two-speed rear axle making 10 forward speeds available.

The chassis is equipped with 9.00-20 (14-ply) tyres and the wheelbase is 13 ft. 6 in.

The cab is of patent unit construction, the main object underlying the design being speedy and economical repair. The platform body, built by the exhibitors, measures 20 ft. by 7 ft. 6 in. It has a hardwood underframe, side raves and floor, with a headboard taken to cab-roof height.

I N association with Valentine and Sons, Ltd., Lamb's Garage Ltd., are showing four Austin vehicles. These are a 1-ton petrol-engined van, an A30 van, a 2-3-ton forward-control longwheelbase oil-engined chassis with platform body, and an oil-engined 5-tonner with drop-sided body.

The 2-3-tonner has the B.M.C. 3.4-litre oil engine, which develops 58 b.h.p. at 2,400 r.p.m. The specification includes an 11-in, clutch, fourspeed gearbox and spiral-bevel rear axle.

In the 5-tonner the B.M.C. 5.1-litre oil engine is used. This unit gives 90 b.h.p. at 2,400 r.p.m., with a maximum torque of 225 lb.-ft. at 1,500 r.p.m.

For speedy local delivery work, the A30 van, which is based on the private'. car chassis, provides 60 cu. ft. of body space. • Its overhead-valve engine has an output of 28 b.h.p. at 4,800 r.p.m.

For heavier loads and where greater space is required, the 1-ton van provides the answer. With full forward control, the 235 cu. ft. of body space can be fully utilized. The 2.2-litre overhead-valve petrol engine gives 46 b.h.p. at 3,250 r.p.m.

A. C. Penman, Ltd., have two Austin 3-ton chassis, on one of which is an alloy platform body and on the other a livestock container, both being of Penman manufacture. With dimensions of 14 ft. 4 in. by 7 ft. 34 in., the platform body weighs only 41 cwt.

On Taggarts stand are a 5-ton oilengined tipper and 2-3-ton van powered by a 4-litre petrol engine. The steellined body on the tipper has Pilot twin-ram gear. The capacity of the van body on the 2-3-ton chassis is • 312 cu. ft. _

• two modds—a 7-tonner, introduced last July, and an A40 van. Powered by the B.M.C. 5.1-litre oil engine. the 7-tonner includes hydraulic power-assisted steering in the standard specification. Eight forward speeds are available through a four-speed gearbox and Eaton Type 16500 two-speed rear axle. With an unladen weight of under n tons, the designed gross laden weight of this model is 104tons.

The A40 van provides 116 Cuft. of body space.

A second 7-tonner, shown by John Mitchell of Greenock, Ltd., has a standard body 16 ft. 6 in, long and 7 ft. wide.

Beadle

Stand 70—Scottish Automobile Co., Ltd.. 39 Lothian Road, Edinburgh, 1.

ABEADLE. 41-seat central-entrance bus powered by a Commer T.S.3 two-stroke oil engine mounted in the centre of the chassis is displayed here. The body and chassis are, integrally built.. hot alloys being extensively employed. The dry weight is 5 tons 1) cwt.

The seats, all of which face forward, are trimmed in moquette and Vaumol leather, the general colour scheme being silver-grey and shades of maroon. The floor is covered with red linoleum, combined with a sorbo-rubber mat running down the central gangway and adjacent to the entrance. The exterior finish is in ivory and red.

Mechanical components, apart from the power unit, are of Commer manufacture.

Bedford

ELEVEN Bedford models are exhibited, ranging from a 10-ton tractor-trailer outfit to 10-12-cwt. models. On the Vauxhall stand there is a 5-ton long-wheelbase oil-engined chassis with a drop-sided body partsectioned to show its construction. .

S.M.T. also show a 5-ton longwheelbase oil-engined chassis, but fitted with a Bonallack all-metal body.

Mounted on a 7-ton oil-engined short-wheelbase chassis is a Neville light-alloy tipping body, the .unladen weight being under 3 .tons. Each of the large number of panels used in the construction of this body is an integral unit containing the floor framing, sides and side frames. Each unit has an effective length of 9 in. and weighs only 27 th., but will safely support a uniformly distributed static load of a ton. The third goods vehicle shown is the 10-12-cwt. model with the Kenex Roadmaster Mark V conversion, in which form it is free from purchase tax.

The Bedford passenger vehicle on this stand is a Duple-bodied Super Vega 41-seat coach.

On the stand occupied by Scammell Lorries, Ltd., there is a Bedford S.A.O. tractor with Scammell coupling gear and a 10-ton semi-trailer having a Bonallack alloy floor.

Watson Bros. have three models on view. One is a Utilabrake conversion by Martin Walter, Ltd., the second a 25-cwt. with a Spurling all-metal van body, and the third a 5-ton longwheelbase oiler with a 12-ft. 6-in. coachbuilt body and Weston tipping gear.

A 7-ton oil-engined chassis with Edbro twin-ram tipping gear is exhibited by MacKay and Jardine. The body is of light-alloy construction by Homalloy. The drop sides are 2 ft. deep and the centre and corner posts and high loading board are detachable. These distributors are also showing a second tipping vehicle—a 5-tormerand a 10-12-cwt. van.

PRINCIPAL interest centres on the new range of Superpoise fourand six-cylindered models. Visitors can see the new four-cylindered overhead-valve engine in the If ton forward-control van exhibited on Stand 103 and in the Superpoise 15-cwt, van on Stand 115. This new unit, which is dealt with on page 416, develops 56 b.h.p. at 3,400 r.p.m.

On the four-cylindered chassis a new worm and sector steering gear is used, and it will be noted that the cab on the Superpoise 15-cwt. and 4-ton models is similar to that fitted to the recently introduced six-cylindered range. It is, however, mounted Idwer and has a ' short sloping bonnet.

All Comrner 5-7-ton forward-control goods chassis and Avenger passenger chassis are now available with a Commer-built overdrive. This unit, which is mounted at the rear of the gearbox, is operated by using the change-speed lever in the normal way. It gives a fifth speed with a ratio of

0.882 to 1 through constant-mesh helical gears.

The Scottish Automobile Co., Ltd., have a Commer forward-control 7-ton chassis, powered by the T.S.3 twostroke engine and fitted with a 6-cu.-yd. tipping body.

An example of the popular Express 8-cwt. van with the new 47 b.h.p. overhead-valve engine is shown by If. Havelock, Ltd. The 100-cu.-ft. body is of unit construction.

Stand 93 contains a Superpoise 5-tonner, with a factory-built, dropsided body and a 12-ton forward-control tractor powered by the 105 b.h.p. T.S.3 two-stroke oil engine and fitted with a two-speed axle; The 5-tonner has a six cylinderecl overhead valve unit which produces 91 b.h.p.

A Superpoise 5-tanner, in this case with a Perkins P.6 oil engine, is also shown on Stand 94. It is a tipper. A second model on Stand 93 is a 7-ton forward-control chassis carrying a lightalloy platform body measuring 18 ft. bs 7 ft. 3 in.

The exhibit by Hamilton Bros., Ltd., comprises a 4-ton forward-control van 'with an all-steel 300-cu.-ft. body, and a 7-ton special van, with the T.S.3 twostroke unit and the new overdrive.

On Stand 114 is a Superpoise 15-cwt. pick-up and a 3-4-ton chassis with a drop-sided body. Claud Hamilton (Aberdeen), Ltd., who occupy the next stand, are exhibiting a Superpoise I 5-cwt, van with a body capacity of 185 Cu. ft., and a 7-ton forward-control platform lorry with the T.S.3 engine.

Daimler

Stand 71,—The Daimler Co., Ltd., Coventry,

SPECIAL interest centres on the modified version of the Daimler C.V.G. 6 lightweight double-decker

chassis, which weighs 44 tons. The modifications have resulted in the production of a doubledeck vehicle of approximately 14 ft. overall height.

The Willowbrook body seats 66 passengers and is built as a semi-integral unit with the cha $ Si S. There is no underframe as usually understood, the floor being fitted on the

chassis members. The sides, which are built as trusses, are carried on outriggers fixed to the chassis members. The roofs of the upper and, lower saloons are of a new design.

Weight saving has been achieved in the chassis by the use of light-alloy castings for the steering gearbox, gearcase and mounting brackets, and engine mounting brackets. Light-alloy castings are also used for the rear portion and inner casing of the fluid coupling.

A Gardner 6LW 8.4-litre oil engine, fluid coupling and four-speed preselector gearbox, and underslung wormdriven rear axle are employed.

The other model on this stand is a Freeline underfloor-engined chassis, powered by the Daimler 10.6-litre 150 b.h.p. horizontal oil engine. Airpowered steering, air-pressure-assisted diaphragm-type brakes are notable features.

Dennis

Stand 117—Central Motor Co., Central Garage, Calderbank, Airdrie.

Stand 118—Dennis Bros., Ltd., Guildford„Surrey.

CENTRE of attraction on the Dennis k-o• stand is the new Heron 3-ton chassis powered by a Perkins P.4V oil engine. Whilst the chassis is of conventional design, the pedals and cab seat have been arranged to give the driver an unusually high position, which enables him to obtain excellent vision all round the front.of the vehicle.

Production models will have a steel cab, but that on the model shown has one of composite construction. A 10-in, clutch with hydraulic-link operation, four-speed gearbox, two-piece propeller shaft and hypoid-gear Tear axle figure in the specification.

Hydraulically operated two-leadingshoe brakes are employed, and telescopic piston-type shock absorbers are fitted as standard on the front axle. The wheelbase is 10 ft. 6 in. and the unladen weight approximately 1 ton 181 cwt.

The other vehicle on' view is a Centaur tractor with Scammell coupling gear and a composite cab. The Centaur chassis is powered by -a six-cylindered direct-injection oil engine which develops V b.h.p. at 2,000 r.p.m. The clutch is 13i in. in diameter and takes the drive to a five-speed constant-mesh gearbox, whence a single propeller shaft drives a two-speed rear axle.

Two examples of the Pax are to be found on the Central Motor stand. Both are 7-tonners, one of 13-ft. 10-1-in. wheelbase and the other 12 ft. 10 in.

Dodge

Stand I22—Dodge Bros. (Britain), Ltd., Mortlake Road, Kew Gardens, Surrey.

FIVE Dodge models shown by Ritchies, Ltd., comprise two 7-tonners, two 5-tonners and a 2-3tonner, all having oil engines. One of the 7-tonners has a 6-cu.-yd. tipping body and the other a platform body. Each has an Eaton two-speed axle.

Of the two 5-tonners, one is seen with a 5-cu.-yd. tipping body and the other with a platform body. The 2-3tanner is exhibited • as a coachbuilt van having a roll-up rear door and folding step.

Ian M. K. Fair is also showing 5-tonners. one with a tipping body and the other as a "flat."

The Dodge company have a type 106 5-ton platform lorry with the Perkins P6 oil engine.

E.R.F.

Stand 10I—James Bowen and Sons, Ltd., .57-59 Pitt Street, Edinburgh, 3. THE only E.R.F. vehiele exhibited at Kelvin Hall is on JameS. Bowen's stand. This is the model 56 TSG, which is a twin-steer six-wheeler with a gross vehicle weight of 151 tons. The Gardner 5LW engine develops 94 b.h.p. at. 1,700 r.p.m. The constant-mesh gearbox provides five forward speeds, a two-piece propeller shaft taking the drive to a worm-driven rear axle.

As exhibited, the chassis is fitted with a Homalloy platform body measuring 20 ft. by 7 ft. 11 in.

Foden

Stand 107—Fodens, Ltd., Elworth Works, Sand bach, Cheshire.

TWO F.G.5/14 vehicles appear here, one with a 15-ft. by 7-ft. tipping body and the other with a 204. platform body. The tipper is equipped with Michelin 0.20 metallic tyres and the other model with 10.00-20 Goodyear. A Gardner 5LW 94 b.h.p. oil engine and a five-speed super-low gearbox are employed.

The F.G.5/14 is designed for a maximum gross load of 14 tons, the payload capacity being 9i tons. Both models have the standard saloon cab.

Ford Thames

Stand 88—Wylies., Ltd., 370 Pollokshaws Road, Glasgow, 5.1. THAMES vehicles are to be found I on six different stands. Alexanders have a 30-cwt. model and a 5-tonner. The former is shown as a coachbuilt van giving 380 cu. ft. of loading space. The 5-tonner has a Perkins P6 oil engine, the chassis being fitted with a light-alloy body measuring 14 ft. 6 in. by 7 ft. 5 in.

A Thames 10-cwt. van and a 30-cwt. oil-engined lorry are shown by Inglis Automobiles. Croft Bodybuilding and Engineering exhibit a 3-ton oil-engined platform lorry and a 30-cwt. baker's van with full forward control and an oil engine. A Thames 3-tonner is also shown by James Laidlaw, together with a 5-cwt.. van.

Another 3-ton oil-engined platform lorry is to be seen on Wylies' stand, together with a 4-cu.-yd. tipper having a Perkins P6 engine. The Thames oil engine has a capacity of 3.6 litres and develops 60 b.h.p. at the governed speed of 2,400 r.p.m.

George and Jobling have on exhibition two models—a 7-cwt. and a 10-cwt. van.

Guy

Stand 125—Universal Garage (Glasgow), Ltd., 2200 Paisley Road • West, Cardonald, Glasgow. "

TW0 Otters are shown by this GuV distributor — a 6-tonner with Perkins P6 oil engine and a Warrior 8-tonner with the Meadows 5.43-litre. unit. The 6-tonner, which has a wheelbase of 9 ft. 9 in., is seen with a Neville light-alloy tipping body.

This body is built up of a large number of separate ribs and as 'bolts are used in the assembly, repair and maintenance are easy. The chassjs has an 11-in, clutch, four-speed constantmesh gearbox and hydraulic brakes with vacuum-servo mechanism. Tyre size is 7.50-20 (10-ply).

The Warrior has a wheelbase of 15 ft. 9 in. and the Meadows eng'ne develops 85 b.h.p. at 2,200 r.p.m., delivering a maximum torque of 230 lb.-ft. at 1,350 r.p.m. It is a four-* cylindered direct-injection unit embodying a harmonic balancing system which gives freedom from the secondary outof-balance forces inherent in the normal four-cylindered in-line unit.

It has a " square " bore and stroke

of 4.724 in. The compression ratio is 16 to 1 and the stated fuel consumption at 2,200 r.p.m. is 0.43 lb.. per b.h.p.-hr.

The chassis is an extremely robust piece of engineering and its specification includes a five-speed gearbox, Eaton two-speed axle, air-hydraulic braking and helper springs at the rear axle. The full-fronted cab has plastics wings and front panels.

Jensen

S land 105—Moodie and Co., 27-29 Co!stan Road, Bishopbriggs, Glasgo w.

IN its latest form the Jen-Tug has the Austin A50 I.5-litre four-cylindered overhead-valve engine. It has a power output of 50 b.h.p. at 4,400 r.p.m., with a torque figure of 70 lb.-ft. at 2,100 r.p:m. As compared with the A40 engine previously fitted, this larger unit gives a claimed increase in first-gear tractive effort of 395 lb.

Fitting the new engine has entailed certain frame modifications, so that the A40 assembly is not interchangeable. The model shown also incorporates a separate reservoir for the hydraulic brakes. Previous models had an integral master cylinder and reservoir;

Included in the ienTug specification ar!e an. 8 in. diameter clutch with hydraulic operation, a fourspeed gearbox and worm-driven rear axle.

IGHT Karriers appear on six different stands. Details of the new overhead-valve engine, now available in the Bantam, are given on p. 416. It is of 2.26-litre capacity and, as fitted in the Bantam, is governed to 3,000 at which speed it develops 53.5 .b.h.p. Its maximum is 56 b.h.p., which is given at 3,400 r.p.m. The long-lifc chromium bores are retained.

Melvin Motors have a Bantam 2-tonner with a grocery-shop body and Hamilton Bros. have a second Bantam also with a grocery body made by Smiths' Delivery Vehicles, Ltd. Body dimensions of the Melvin exhibit are 14 ft. by 6 ft. 10 in., the chassis being of 10-ft. 2-in, wheelbase. The second Bantam, of 8-ft. 2-in, wheelbase, has a body 11 ft. 4i in. long and 6 ft. 81 in. wide.

Erskine have three Bantam 2-tonners on view, the diverse types of body bearing testimony to the adaptability of this make of vehicle. A butcher's shop, by Smiths' Delivery Vehicles, Ltd., has similar dimensions to the grocery body displayed by Melvin. A bread van provides 480 cu. ft. of load space, whilst the third exhibit is a tipper.

A dual-purpose bakery van bodyis fitted to a Bantam shown by Claud Hamilton.

Two Gamecock 3-4-ton platform lorries are available for inspection, that on Stand 94 being powered by the T.S.3 two-stroke engine and the model on Stand 115 by a six-cylindered underfloor engine. The power rating of the T.S.3, as exhibited in the Gamecock chassis, is 75 b.h.p.

Leyland

Stand 100—Leyland Motors, Ltd., 140 Sulkeld Street, Glasgow, C.5. THERE are three Leyland models at Kelvin Hall. One is a Comet forward-control tipper with a 100 b.h.p. engine and another a Titan double-deck bus fitted with a Pneumo-Cy clic gearbox, both of which are on the Leyland stand. Next door, John Gibson have a Ceiet passenger chassis with a low-loading van body of 1,600 cu. ft. • The tipper has been specifically -designed for easy handling in confined spaces, Arid it will be noted that the Leyland double-skin all-metalcab gives the 'driver visibility to within a few, inches of the front wheels., The wheelbase is 9 ft. 10 in. and the turning circle 45 ft. The specification includes a five-speed gearbox and Eaton twospeed axle.

The steel body and twin-ram underbody tipping gear are of Edbro manufacture. The body measures 12 ft. by -6 ft. 11 in. and is 2 ft. deep.

An Alexander., body is fitted to the .Titan chassis,. the 'vehicle being to the

Order of Glasgow Corporation. It is a 60-seater, his a steel frame with alutninitim panelling and weighs just under 3 tons 4 cwt., giving a gross laden vehicle 'weight of 8. tons 6 cwt. 3 qr. • The Leyland patented stabilizer which prevents excessive roll on corners is fitted.

The Comet pantechnicon on Stand 951. has a cab and body of light alloy.

M INE Morris vehicles are displayed 1 NI by five distributors. Fife Motor Co. have two models-a 5-cwt. van and an LE1101 1-ton oil-engined van. The B.M.C. overhead-valve engine used in the 5-cwt. model develops 30 b.h.p. A four-speed gearbox and hypoid-gear rear axle are employed. The capacity of the body is 78 Cu, ft.

The oil engine in the LD01 van is of 2.2-litre capacity and develops 55 b.h.p. at 3,500 r.p.m. The body is of 235-cu.-ft. capacity.

A 10-cwt. van is shown by Wylie and Lochhead, Ltd. This model, which has a 41 b.h.p. engine, has a body providing 120 Cu. ft. of body space.

A pick-up version of the 5-cwt. model is exhibited by IWestfield Autocar. The load space is 4 ft. 5i in. square, with sides 19 in. high. Also to be seen on this stand is a 10-cwt. van.

McLay's Garage are showing 5-cwt. and 10-cwt. models, both with van bodies, and an LD1 1-tonner fitted with a petrol engine. This unit, which is of 2.19-litre capacity, develops 46 b.h.p. at 3,250 r.p.m.

1--IN _the stand of Westfield Autocar Co., Ltd., are a Model I/R 10-cwt. van, a 2-3-ton normal-control van and an 'example of the new 7-tonner. The 10-cwt. van has a I i-litre petrol engine, which gives 36 b.h.p. at 3,500 r.p.m., a three-speed gearbox and hypoid-gear rear axle. The body, which has sliding cab doors, has a "payload space of 150,cu. ft.

Roll-up rear doors, sliding doors on each side and full-height moulded rubber rear corners are features of the special body on the 2-3-ton chassis. Its dimensions are 12 ft, 4 in. by 6 ft. 5 in'.

by 5 ft. 9i in. The chassis has a 3.4-litre oil engine which gives 58 b.h.p. at 2,400 r.p.m.

The new 7-tonner has a 5.1-litre oil engine which develops a maximum of 90 b.h.p. at 2,400 r.p.m., the torque at 1,500 r.p.m. being 228 lb./ft. Other chassis features include a 12-in, clutch, four-speed gearbox and Eaton twospeed axle. The gross vehicle weight of this model is 10i tons, the licensing weight being 2 tons 17 cwt.

A 30-cwt. oil-engined van, with body 'built to special order, is shown on Stand 87.

McLay's have a 5-ton oiler with Bonallack light-alloy platform body 16 ft. 6 in. long, with a 3-ft. 8-in. bulkhead. The B.M.C. oil engine in this model is the 5.1-litre unit.

Three models are staged on Stand Ill, these being a Series LD2 14-ton van, a 3-ton oil-engined forwardcontrol drop-sided lorry and a 7-ton tractor and semi-trailer with Scammell quick-coupling gear.

Special interest is attached to the tractor, which is the first application of the 7-ton chassis to this kind of work. Eight forward speeds are made available through the standard fourspeed gearbox and an Eaton Type 16500 two-speed rear 'axle, the ratios being 6.14 and 8.54 to 1.

Reliant

THREE-WHEELERS are represented 1 by the Reliant Regent 10-cwt. van . on Stand 82. It has a four-cylindered petrol engine which develops 14 b.h.p.

at 2,500 r.p.m. A Borg and Beck single-plate clutch drives through a three--speed gearbox to a Hardy Spicer shaft with needle-roller joints and a hypoid-gear rear axle.

Girlitig brakes operate on all wheels, the brake-drum diameter at the rear .being 9 in.'and at the front 7 in. Semielliptic underslung springs are used on the rear axle, With coil-spring suspension for the single front wheel. Unladen weight is 9 cwt.

Rover (Land-Rover)

Stand 69-RoSsleigh Ltd., 32 Shandwick Place, Edinburgh, 2.

THE Land-Rover is one Of the most versatile vehicles built in this country. There are two basic chassis, the essential difference between them being in the wheelbase. A 2-litre petrol engine of 52 b.h.p. at 4,000 r.p.m., supplies the power. A four-speed main gearbox and a two-speed .transfer bait give eight forward speeds.

Nine models are exhibited by two distributors. RossIeigh, Ltd., have four, these being a standard vehicle and a hard-top version, both. of 7-ft. 2-in.wheelbase. The station wagon shown also has the short wheelbase, whilst a de luxe pick-up body is based on the 8-ft. 11-in.-wheelbase chassis.

In addition to a de luxe pick-up, a station wagon and two 7-ft. 2-in.wheelbase models, James Gibbon have a standard version of the pick-up.

Stand 76-Scamrnell Lorries, Ltd., Watford West, Herts.

LOCAL delivery and trunk haulage .1-+ are both served by Scammells at Kelvin Hail, the first by a Scarab 3-ton mechanical horse and the second by a Bedford S.A.O. tractor with Scarnmell coupling gear and 23-ft. 10-ton semitrailer. To demonstrate the quickcoupling gear, the Scarab is fitted with an electric motor in place of the engine. .

The Bonallack alloy floor on the 10-ton semi-trailer was fitted by S.M.T. Sales and Service Co., Ltd.

Seddon

,Stand 105-2t'ioodie and Co., ,g729 Colston Road, Bishopbriggs, Glasgow.

QEDDON models on view are a Mk.5L 6-7-tonner of 13-ft. 6-in. wheelbase with a platform body, a Mk.5S10 6-7-tonner, with 54-co.-yd. tipping body, and a 25-cwt. van having a Perkins-P3V oil engine.

The 6-7-tanners are powered by Liu Perkins P6 unit, which develops 83 b.h.p. at 2,400 r.p.m. The wheelbase of the tipper is 10 ft. Both these models have similar chassis components, which include a five-speed constant-mesh gearbox, hypoid-gear rear axle, and hydraulically operated two-leadingshoe brakes with vacuum-servo • mechanism.

The 2.36-litre engine in the 25-cwt, van develops 39 b.h.p. at 2,400 r.p.m. The vehicle has a four-speed constantmesh gearbox and •hypoiel-gear rear axle.

THREE types of Standard vehicle are i staged—the 6-cwt. van and pick-up and the Vanguard 12-cwt. model. Cameron and Campbell have two 6-cwt. models—a van and a pick-up. The 6-cwt. van is also to be found on Stands 79, 82 and 83. The only 12-cwt. van is exhibited by Macharg, Rennie and Lindsay.

Both models are based on private-car chassis, the 6-cwt. vehicle being the

commercial version at the 10 h.p. car and the 12-cwt. machine has -a similar

specification to the Vanguard. The smaller vehicle has a 33 b.h.p. engine, four-speed gearbox and hypoid-gear rear axle. Independent suspension of the front wheels is by coil springs and wishbones.

A 2-litre engine, developing 68 b.h.p. at 4,200 r.p.m., is used in the 12-cwt. chassis. A three-speed gearbox with steering-column change, and independent front-wheel suspension are included in the specification.

Thornyeroft

Stand 90—Transport Equipment (Thornycroit), Ltd„ 57-61 Bishop Street, Glasgow.

IN the Thornycroft exhibit, which comprises four vehicles, there are two new models and a short-wheelbase version of the well-known Trident, which is exhibited as a tractor with Scammell 10-ton quick-coupling gear.

The new models are the Swiftsure and an eight-wheeler, built for a gross vehicle weight of 24 tons (The Com • mercial Motor, November 4),. The SwiftSure has been designed for 6-6kton payloads and has an unladen weight of 2 tons 6 cwt. It is powered by a 4.18-litre oil engine, developing 80 b.h.p. at 2,600 r.p.m.

As exhibited, it has a cab made of reinforced glass fibre and although this may be offered as an alternative in the near future, production, Models will have the Thornycroft all-steel cab.

• The new eight-wheeler is offered with either a double-drive bogie or with a trailing rear axle. The six-eylindered direct-injection oil engine of 9.83-litre capacity produces 140 b.h.p. at 2,000 r.p.m., with a maximum torque of 420 lb.-ft. at 1,000 r.p.m. Power-assisted steering is a notable feature. The chassis is shown with the maker's latest pressed-steel cab.

A 5.51-litre direct-injection oil engine developing 90 b.h,p. at 2,200 r.p.m. is used in the Trident tractor and the choice of 10 forward speeds is given by a five-speed gearbox in conjunction with an Eaton two-speed rear axle. The chassis weight in licensing order is approximately 2 tons 17i cwt.

A fourth exhibit is a Sturdy special medium-load chassis having a 10-ft. wheelbase. It is shown with a 3-ton crane, the drive to which is taken from a Martin Harper power take-off on the gearbox.

Trojan

TROJAN vehicles, which can be seen

on Stands 101 and 121, share with the Seddon 25-cwt. the distinction of having the smallest oil engine in any vehicle displayed. Malcolm and Allan have three models, a 1-ton longwheelbase chassis, a 1-ton longwheelbase large-capacity van and a personnel wagon with a wheelbase of 7 ft. 10 in.

The Perkins P.3V oil engine used develops 41 b.h.p. at 2,400 r.p.m. The Trojan has a three-speed gearbox. hypoid-gear rear axle and

hydraulically operated brakes. In general service, Trojans have recorded fuel-consumption figures of 40-50 m.p.g. The chassis weight is 19i cw‘t., and the gross vehicle weight -4 tons.

The loading capacity of the van body is 280 Cu. ft., the unladen weight being 29 cwt.

The body of the personnel wagon is of composite construction and has double-opening rear doors. There are five seats arranged longitudinally on each side of the bOdy, with a further passenger seat alongside the driver. NO

purchase tax is payable. , A'second personnel wagon is shown by James Bowen: It has an over-all

length Of 14 ft. .

Volkswagen

Stand I04—Cameron and Campbell, Ltd., .171-181 Bothwell Street, Glasgow, C.2.

THE only foreign commercial vehicle to be shown is the German-built Volkswagen, three versions of which can be seen on Stand 104. Two are 15-cwt, vans, the only difference

between them being that one body has double doors on only one side and the other has them on both sides.

The third model is a 15-cwt. pick-up. In its chassis design the Volkswagen cannot be compared with any British vehicle, in that it has a four-cylindered horizontally opposed, air-cooled engine mounted at the rear.

F30 Full advantage is taken of the unobstructed space thus made available for the body, which, for a vehicle rated at 15 cwt., offers the large loading space of 141 Cu. ft. in the main section, plus 21 cu. ft. over the engine bay. As the side doors are unusually wide, loading and unloading are particularly easy. The Volkswagen chassis was modified this year to the extent of improving the suspension and braking. Body modifications have resulted in providing increased space and larger tyres have been fitted.
