PROTEST ON EMPLOYERS' METHODS.

The Association of British Chambers of Commerce is seeking the views of constituent Chambers, as to contravention of statutes and regulations concerning drivers' hours and unauthorized use of vehicles, and as to the use of goods trailers behind private

cars. In a resultant discussion at' Dewsbury Chamber of Commerce, recently, Mr. W. E. Gundill (president) declared that the long hours which some lorry drivers were having to evork constituted a scandal. There was a use for road vehicles, he remarked. but long journeys and almost unlimited weights made the position scandalous.

Although he had no financial interest in the railways, he thought that, from a broad national point of view, the railways should be used for transporting many of the heavy loads which

were seen on the roads to-day. He agreed that the bigger concerns of road haulage operators made proper provision for the relief of drivers, but many of the smaller undertakings tried to compete by committing breaches.

Mr. C. S. Wooldridge said the Association required evidence in support of the contention that the regulations were not being observed, and suggestions as to how contravention could be prevented. Mr. Gundill said: " We cannot say we can give evidence, but we are of the definite opinion that the law is being evaded."

With regard to the use of goods trailers behind private cars, the feeling was in opposition to this practice.
