Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• Cumberland County Council is opposing any attempt at the present time to ban commercial through traffic from A591 Kendal to Keswick road.

Although it has expressed some sympathy with the idea of eventually controlling heavy traffic on the route, which runs through such notorious black spots as Ambleside and Windermere, it is felt that such a move would only serve to accentuate the existing congestion on A66 route from Penrith to Cockermouth — shortly to be up-graded to trunk road standard following a protracted public inquiry last year.

A proposal to by-pass Ambleside, with its 16ft carriageway and pavements barely 18in. wide, would certainly make life a lot easier for both drivers and pedestrians alike. Although work on the by-pass — first mooted half-a-century ago — could have been started by now the project has incurred the wrath of the Lake District conservation lobby and, in what appears to be a self-defeating move, they have forced the issue to a public inquiry to be held later this year.

In the meantime, fearing further undue delay, the Lake District Planning Board and the Ambleside council, together with the backing of the Westmorland County Council, are pressing the Department for the Environment to take steps to prohibit heavy traffic, not having business in the area, without delay.
