Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

nUR.ING the course of the next few months ranch of the current range of commercial-vehicle brakes being produced by Girling, Ltd., will be subject to design changes, and several of the new types of brake will be exhibited at the Commercial Motor Show in September. This information was given to The Commercial Motor this week.

The improvements will be confined to drum brakes, consisting essentially of hydraulically actuated equipment for light and medium vehicles and air-operated cam brakes for heavy chassis. A new type of rear brake is being evolved for goods vehicles in the 5-, 6-, 7and 8-ton classes. This will have internal hydraulic cylinders, permitting direct actuation of the shoes as opposed to the current types with external cylinders and mechanical linkages. The new layout will give increased efficiency and higher shoe lift (up to 0.11 in. compared with 0.08 in.), primarily to cope with drum expansion, but also increasing times between adjustments.

The current type of heavy-duty cam brake is to be made available with 0.75-in.-thick linings, as opposed to the 0.5-in, linings at present fitted, whilst for lighter vehicles development work is under way with the object of reducing pedal pressures without the need for servos. This will be done by increasing the self-servo action/of the brakes, particularly those at the rear,
