At the Maidstone round on Sunday committee men were sporting county LDoY ties, and one tanker driver had taken the front bumper off his Scammell in order to save 6in. off his tractive unit length. • And this year as road route details were sent to drivers with their documentation some of the entrants had been able to drive over the route by car before the day. This keenness paid off as the route was not signposted by the AA.

However, the great way to save on penalty points this year remains to brush up on knowledge of the Highway Code and legal responsibilities; such questions as "If you are driving a very wide, or a long, or a slow-moving vehicle across a half-barrier level crossing which you cannot cross at more than: (a) 3 mph. (b) 4 mph, (c) 5 mph, 1d) 10 mph, you must first phone the signalman. Which is it?"

This situation, is, of course, one not met by most drivers, and for the record the answer is (c)-5 mph.

Ideally, all the drivers should know all the answers but it was the sort of thing that made some who failed badly comment that more accent should be placed on driving skill. It's a fact that judged on these results the man against whom is recorded the lowest number of Highway Code penalties in his class very likely wins and anyway doesn't come lower than third.

The overall winner, W. Hall, a late entrant, lost 60 HC points, but none on the road route, and led the field comfortably with a total of only 80 penalty points. He headed Class B last year.

C. L. Joseph, who last year driving a rigid in the National Finals fared better than any other Kent competitor, goes through to Bramcote again, this time in a tanker; he was a comfortable 64 points ahead of anyone else in Class H.
