Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• Mr L. S. Payne, group co-ordinator at the British Road Services Ltd group of companies, this week was appointed to the newly created post of director of technical services and development at the National Freight Corporation. The appointment became effective immediately, but until a successor is appointed at Northway House Mr Payne will continue as group co-ordinator.

In the meantime, the management structure at BRSL has been reorganized. Mr W. C. Webster and Mr J. D. Mather become assistant managing directors.

Mr Webster will be responsible to the co-ordinator for the development and engineering departments and five districts, North . East, East Anglia, South Wales, South West and South East. In addition, he will have overall control of Cartransport and Mortons (BRS) Ltd.

Mr Mather (formerly staff director) will be responsible to the co-ordinator for the marketing, operations and staff departments and the remaining five districts, Scotland, North West, East Midlands, West Midlands and South Midlands.

Mr R. V. Cole, director of BRS (Contracts) Ltd has responsibility for London contracts, and H. & G. S. Bell Ltd. Mr J. K. Watson is executive director, finance. Mr K. P. H. Fielding continues to control the marketing department and Mr J. Farrant the operations department. Mr C. A. F. Gotteri is in charge of the development department and Mr W. D. C. Batstone controls the engineering department.

A manager has yet to be appointed to the staff department.

Mr I.,. S. Payne's career before joining BRSL, where he became managing director in 1969, was principally in the financial field (CM October 23).

A spokesman for NFC said this week that Mr Payne's NFC appointment was part of a restructuring of the Corporation. Mr Payne's duties would involve him in all aspects of engineering, operation, finance and development of the 30-odd companies within the corporation.
