Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

F,ACED with an increase of about £300,000a year incostsconsequent on recent wage rises, the Ulster Transport Authority and the Great Northern Railway Board are to increase certain charges from June 28.

Season-ticket rates arc to be increased by 5-20 per cent, and workmen's fares by a sixth. The charge for parcels carried by bus will rise by about 22 per cent.

Mr. G. B. Howden, chairman ofboth the U.T.A. and the Great' Northern Railway, said that in adopting these' proposals they were acting in advance of the Transport Tribunal's decision. The proposal would, however, still form part of the case to be heard by the Tribunal, who could make any revision they thought fit. In all probability, he said, the proposals would include reductions in ordinary single and return fares.

Commenting that he thought there had been a "quite remarkable" improvement in the financial position of U.T.A., Mr. Bowden added: "We believe that as far as the Authority is concerned the transport problem, while it has not actually been solved, is in process of being solved, and it is not beyond the realm of possibility—in fact. probability—that in the not-too-distant future the Authority will be working on a self-supporting basis."
