MR. S. J. BURN has been appointed maintenance superintendent of the transport, electrical and heating section of Hendon Borough Engineer and Surveyor's Department SIR CULLUM WELCH has joined the board of C. C. Wakefield and Co., Ltd., and succeeds MR. HOLLAND YOUNG BLADES, who served the company since their foundation 55 years ago. Sir Cullum has been their legal adviser for over 25 years.

MR. J. F. A. BAKER has been appointed chief engineer, highways, of • the Ministry. of Transport in succession tO MR. E. B. HUGH-JONES, who is to retire. Mr. Baker, who was lately deputy chief engineer, joined the Ministry in 1929, and in 1947 was appointed Wales and Monmouth divisional road engineer. MR. T. J. D. MORRIS has been elected chairman and MR. R. SPARROW deputychairman of the London centre of the Institute of Traffic Administration. The vice-chairmen are MR. W. HemSON and MR. L. J. Cox. MR. T. H. CAREY is the new chairman of the Merseyside centre and MR. D. E. Px-rmasoN vice-chairman. The chairman and vice-chairman of the Preston centre are MR. T. JACKSON and Maw. A. BRACEGIRDLE respectively.

MR A. J. BRIDGEFORD, Brecon area manager of the Western Welsh Omnibus Co., Ltd., since 1930, is to retire. Mr. Bridgeford, who is 75, has been with Western Welsh since it was formed in 1929, and altogether has given 50 years' service to the bus industry. Other veterans also due to retire from the company are MR. G. LOCKLEY, internal auditor, MR. A. E. SMITH, parcels manager, Ma. R. THOMAS, of Bridgend depot, Ma. F. ALLAN and MR. N. BROWN.

MR. F. BROOMFIELD, of Barton Transport, Ltd., has been elected chairman of the national council of the Passenger Vehicle Operators' Association. The national vice-chairmen are MR. F. J. Smarr (Geo. Ewer and Co., Ltd.), MR. H. W. B. RICHARDS (Salopia Saloon Coaches, Ltd.), MR. T. HOYLE (Messrs. T. Hoyle and Son), and MR. A. E. BREWER (Brewers Motor Services, Ltd.). MR. S. D. ODDY (Surrey Motors, Ltd.) is honorary treasurer. Ma_ J. M. BIRCH remains chairman of the national executive and finance committee. New area chairmen are as follows:—East Midland, MR. L. W. Evstis; northern, MR. W. EMMERSON; north-western, MR. F. BRAZENDALE; Scottish, MR. W. DODDS; South Wales, MR. BREWER; western, MR. G. J. MILLER; West Midland, MR. RICHARDS; Yorkshire, MR. MR. S. BRAMHALL, managing director of Smith's Stamping Works (Coventry), Ltd., has succeeded the late Mit. J. F. BYRNE as chairman.

MR. RAYMOND ELAND, formerly with the Durham County Fire Brigade as divisional engineer in its transport department, has been appointed transport manager by the Blaydon Cooperative Society.

MR. R. ails has been appointed manager of British United Traction, Ltd. His immediate duties will be concentrated on the expanding activities of the company, which last year formed a new division to handle Diesel train units.

MR. H. STANLEY KNOTT, M.A., M.Inst.T., traffic manager of the Great Northern Railway (Ireland), has been appointed chief traffiemanager of the Ulster Transport Authority, in succession to MR. J. W. HuTroN, M.Inst.T., who retires at the end of this year. He will act as traffic manager of both undertakings.

Ma. S. M. KING has been appointed sales development officer of Henley's Tyre and Rubber Co., Ltd. In the past he has been associated with Morris Motors, Ltd., the Iranian Oil Co., and from 1939-51, was transport manager of the County of London Electricity Authority. Lately he has been sales director of the A.S.K. Equipment Co.
