Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

By A. HEGARTY

rAST, careful handling of freight shipments at lorry terminals is essential to the success' of a modern fleet. The importance of this is demonstrated by Campbell " 66 " Express Inc., who haul freight from the Great Lakes to the Gulf of Mexico. Link-Belt Trukveyor systems are installed at all seven of their major terminal docks— St. Louis, Springfield, Kansas City, Jackson, New Orleans, Memphis and Birmingham.

The seven clocks are " break-bulk " points, where major gains can be achieved by relieving congestion.

The continuous materials handling method inherent in a Trukveyor system provides more, storage space on the docks, because aisle space is virtually eliminated and practically no freight is " floored ". With sorting of incoming freight effected direeth: from the vehicle. everything moves in prescribed paths on four-wheel platform trucks. Schedules' are considerably improved.

At each of the seven installations, four-wheeled trucks, each with a platform of about 32 in. x 48 in., have replaced pallets formerly used to store and transport freight. In addition, most of the fork-lift trucks used to move pallet loads of freight by the old method are now reassigned to other work. Now, inbound freight is loaded directly to four-wheeled carts and coupled to either overhead or in-the-floor chain conveyors, as seen in pictures on the following page. Continuously operating Trukveyors have been found to eliminate delays in routing to various bays for cargo removal and transfer to lorries.

Trukveyors have helped to reduce

incorrect loading and the time spent in searching for specific loads by keeping shipments segregated. Not only is handling reduced: manual 'movement of loads by handcart is kept to a minimum and this permits an easier pace, even though more goods are handled.

Campbell "66" have found the LinkBelt Trukveyor a smooth-working system for moving freight rapidly in an orderly flow, and for speeding up . unloading, sorting and dispatching.
