SPD managing director Bob Beckham to serve on a committee to look at the Department of Transport's methods of appraising trunk road schemes.

Answering a Parliamentary question, Mr Rodgers announced that the committee would be chaired by Sir George Leitch. Other members are Professor T. E. H. Williams, M. Middleton, Professors P. Hall and J. Durbin, and Dr S. Glaister, and Dr J. Prideatui of British Rail.

National Carriers' depotman Frank Thorpe who arrested a man trying to steal tobacco from the NCL Ipswich depot, was presented with a silver salver last week.

The award was for meritorious service, and has been instituted by National Freight Corporation chairman Sir Dan Pettit.

The intruder — later sentenced to five years in prison — was seen by David Watcham in the depot but Frank Thorpe chased the man and arrested him after a struggle.

Lady Pettit made the award to Mr Thorpe at the Ipswich depot. He also received a cheque. Pickfords Removals has appointed Charles Richmond manager of their Winchester branch. The move is a return to Winchester for Mr Richmond who has been managing the Portsmouth branch for three and a half years.

Maurice Hill, manager of the Roadline UK depot at Leicester has retired from the company after 42 years in the industry.

On the passenger front, Robert Davies is the new operations director of the West Yorkshire PTE. He succeeds John Rostron who has retired.

Mr Davies, currently operations manager of the PTE, was transport general manager for Doncaster.

Jim McCluskey, operations director of the Leyland Truck and Bus plants at Bathgate and Scotstoun, has resigned. He is to join an international company as a senior executive: MAN salesman Bernard Ingle has won a E350 holiday in a sales incentive launched by the company. Managing director of his company, Kenneth Hensby Ltd, Richard Hensby, received a prize of cut glass decanters.

Joint third place was won by J. McAleer of MITM Plant and Commercial (NI), G. A. Richmond of MITM Plant and Commercials (Scotland) and L. McBurney of Gresford Garage Company, Wrexham, who also won decanters.

Dennis Motors has appointed Frank Boardman and Don Plumley to its main board. Both men are associate directors.

Other board changes at Dennis involve John Hood, currently works director who becomes chief ekecutive of the Bus and Coach division.

Mr Boardman will be taking over as works director. Financial director M. .I. Newman becomes commercial director, and chief accountant Nigel Davis becomes financial director.
