Arrangements Made for Postal Lectures and Subsequent Examinations,

The Ninth Annual Inspection of Commercial Motor Vehicles, organized by the Commercial Motor Users Association (Incorporated) with the object of encouraging drivers, by means of money prizes and other awards, to take a personal interest in the driving and condition of their vehicles, and to run them without accident, will take place in London during the month of May, 1915; but the usual assembly, or parade oi vehicles, will not be neld this year, owing to the difficulty of sparing vehicles from service during the present period of stress.

The organization of these annual inspections, which are supported by the Royal Automobile Club and the Society of Motor Manufactarers and Trader, is in the hands of a special committee. The prize fund is subscribed by users, and by manufacturers and suppliers of vehicles, tires, bodies, fuels and accessories, Prizes will be awarded to drivers for results obtained in written and in oral examinations, coupled with inspection of their vehicles under running conditions. In this way it is hoped to carry on the educational work among drivers, which has been one of the aims of the association since its formation.

ENTRIES.—Entries may be made forthwith on the official form, and should be received not later than the 15th of February, 1915. They may be for—

(a) Oral examination for drivers of steam vehicles and tractors.

(b) Written examination for drivers of steam vehicles and tractors.

(c) Oral examination for drivers of petrol vehicles.

(d) Written examination for drivers of petrol vehicles.

(e) Oral examination for drivers of electric vehicles.

(f) Written examination for drivers of electric vehicles, Drivers may enter for all three subjects, steam, petrol, and electric, in either oral or written ; but no driver may enter for examinations (a) and (b), and (c) and (d), or (e) and (1).

Members of the C.M.U.A. may enter any number of their drivers free ; and non-members upon payment of a fee of 21 is. for each driver entered.

LECTURES BY Peer.—Series of lectures are being specially prepared by the inspecting engineer to the association—six for steam drivers, six for petrol drivers, and one or two for electric drivers. These lectures, which will be sent to the drivers by post fortnightly, commencing in February, 1915, will constitute a correspondence course of technical education for drivers. They will be written and illustrated in a manner which should easily be understood ; and drivers will be at liberty to write and ask questions arising from the lectures. EXANINA TIONS. —The examinations will be based on the information contained in the lectures. The oral examinations Will be spread over several evenings, and the written examinations will be held on three separate evenings.

MARKINGS.—The marks obtained by the drivers in the examinations will be recorded by the committee, and all drivers obtaining more than a fixed percentage of marks will have their vehicles inspected under working conditions by the engineer before the final awards are. made.

PRIZ ES. —This following cash prizes will be awarded by the Inseection Committee of the Association :— The winners of 1st, 2nd, and 3rd prizes will each receive a special badge and certificate, whilst 21 prizewinners and each driver who gains more than a certain percentage of marks will also receive a certificate. Winners of 210 in the 1913 or 1914 examinations are not eligible to take cash prizes in this section, but they will be allowed to sit for the exarninaion, and their order of merit will be announced. 1,We understand that the Committee has found it necessary to restrict entry to owners and drivers within such a distance from London that the men can attend the examinations in London.—En.] (2) C.M.U.A. GENERAL PRIZES (ORAL EXAMINATION).

These prizes, which will amount to about £50 in total value, sub-divided into cash priz,es of 22, 11, and 10s., and commendation badges, will be awarded at the discretion of the inspection committee to drivers of vehicles, based on the number of marks awarded.
