David Harris investigates the apparent shortage of fuel at Nightow

TRUCKSTOP OPERATOR Nightowl has been repeatedly running out of fuel and shutting down the pumps at some of its Midlands sites in recent weeks, but the reason for the closures is unclear.

Frustrated drivers who have rolled up needing fuel to find only dry pumps have included Dave Parratt owner of DJ Parratt Haulage of mid-Wales, who tried to use the Nightowl site at junction 1 of the M54. He says: "1 must have found the only fuel station that doesn't have fuel. This occurs quite frequently apparently as I have been there on a number of occasions only to find pumps shut down or only one pump working."

Further investigation by CM revealed that both the Alconbury and Rugby re-fuelling sites were closed in the middle of last week. At Rugby a sign said -Closed till further notice" (see pic) but staff were unable to explain the reasons for the closure. Nightowl managing director Murdo Macdonald was unavailable for comment on the shut-downs, although last month the manager of the V verhampton site, Steve Guttril said that any fuel shortages N.■ "probably linked to the rene of pumps, resulting in tempo' restrictions on fuel sales".

Alconbury and Rugby among six truckstops bough' Nightowl last year from oil g BP in a deal totalling £13.5m.

Parratt, who was also crit of food prices and security at site on junction 1 of the M54 told his drivers to stop using truckstop. He says: "It seems t, a site just for making profit f the people on whom their depends."
