Drivers flex their might over T\T bonuses and against Great Bear in a contract row. David Harris and Jennifer Ball report.

DRIVER POWER was much in evidence this week with drivers from Great Bear Distribution taking industrial action over new contracts and TNT forced to increase bonuses 10 avert strike action at its Hull depot.

Over 30 drivers and warehouse staff at Great Bear Distribution's Basildon site, all members of the T&G, went on strike to oppose the company's plans for new contracts which would cut some pay rates and would hit holiday and sick benefits.

Last March the firm took over a contract to deliver Michelin tyres; drivers transferred across under the TUPE regulations, which protect pay and conditions.

The T&G warns that Great Bear's decision to change the contracts could contravene the TUPE regs. "The drivers and warehouse staff provided a loyal service to Michelin and the previous contractor but they feel well and truly undermined by Great Bear." says T&G regional organiser Geoff Jarvis."We have tried to negotiate with managers but they are deaf to reason."

Jarvis claims that any drivers who refuse to sign up to the new contracts face the sack by the end of this week. "I think Michelin should be getting involved to ensure the rights of us ex-employees," he says. "By not doing anything it is condoning Great Bear's actions." Great Bear declines to conunent on the issues raised. However, it is believed that the proposed new contracts are designed to harmonise pay and conditions across all its contracts.
