N a reserved judgment at Chesterfield County Court, last week, Judge Sir Henry Braund awarded damages of £182 against the British Transport Commission and one of their drivers, Richard Griffiths, Tank Street, Ironville.

The case resulted from a collision between an articulated vehicle of the Commission and a van belonging to Wm. H. Saw (Riddings), Ltd., which occurred at a sharp bend on Jubilee Hill, Selston.

The back of the semi-trailer had swung round on the bend and struck the van. This was deflected and struck a gate and a telegraph pole.

"On a narrow road with a wet surface the need for special care was obvious." said the Judge. He added that although there had been negligence by Griffiths, it was not of a very gross type.

Damages were made up of £132 for repairs to the van and the hire of a replacement, and £50 for damage to goods. •

ADVICE SOUGHT OVER DEFICIT DISPUTE

FOLLOWING a decree by the Ministry of Local Housing and Government that the charges for using Consett bus station were too high, Consett Urban Council have decided to take legal advice.

The council are in dispute with local bus operators about the payment of a £2,355 deficit on the running of the station. Before 1957, the bus companies met any deficit, but since then they have refused because they were dissatisfied with the system of charges.

Some months ago, the council proposed to raise the charge for the use of the station from Is. to Is. 41d., per bus per day. When the bus operators objected at an inquiry, it was said that the old and new charges were too high. The Ministry said that the rate, from August I, should be 9d.

The amount of 12,355 is the accumulated deficit from April, 1957, to the end of July this year.
