Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

FLEET standardization and greater flexibility are being sought by J. and A. Smith (Maddiston), Ltd. Mr. W. F. Quin, Scottish Licensing Authority, was told this at Glasgow, last week, when the company successfully applied to replace a number of rigid lorries with articulated units.

Approval was granted for the replacement of four eight-wheelers of 16 tons, a six-wheeler of 12 tons and a sixwheeler of 10 tons by suitable articulated vehicles.

A further application, for six existing articulated units to be replaced by six alternative units, was also granted. For the company, Mr. Roderick Mackenzie said that there would be no additional capacity: it might even decrease.

VOLUNTEERS FOR CHRISTMAS

DIRMINGHAM transport undertaking

will, for the first time, this year run their Christmas bus services with volunteer crews, In the past, the undertaking, the only passenger-carrying service in the Midlands to operate on Christmas day, has backed volunteer crews by detailed staff.

The transport committee, in recognition of the long hours now being worked by the platform staff to keep services running, have agreed to the voluntary working. They hope that sufficient staff will volunteer to operate a full service, but if that is not the case, priority will be given to services to hospitals.
