Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

EXCESSIVE SMOKE emissions during a test drive has cost a mechanic employed by Purfleet Commercials £185 in fines and costs. Andrew French pleaded guilty to the offence when he appeared before the Basildon magistrates.

Michelle Brown, prosecuting, told the court that at 3.10pm on 30 November 2004 a Daf driven by French had been stopped by police on the A13 travelling in the direction of London, nearThurrock. It was seen to be emitting thick black smoke. French had said he was a mechanic who was test driving the vehicle which had been fitted with a new turbocharger.

Chris Butterfield, appearing for French, said he would challenge the statement that thick black smoke was being emitted. The new turbocharger had almost certainly been coated with a protective film of oil, which burned off during the road test as the engine heated up. That would lead to an emission of blue smoke. He pointed out that French had been on the Al3 for only half a mile when stopped.

The only way to discover a problem with oil in the turbocharger was through roadtesting the truck to which it had been fitted. Butterlield pointed out. No further work had been done to that component, which indicated that once the oil had burnt off the problem had disappeared with it.
