Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

I N drilling for oil, fluid or " mud " is pumped down the drill pipe through the bit for cooling purposes; thence it is returned to the surface around the outside of the pipe, carrying the cuttings with it. To dispose of the drilling mud, Cia. Shell de Venezuela, Ltd., have recently taken delivery of two special vacuum tankers of 4,500 Imperial gallons capacity that were specially built to their requirements by Bris-towes Machinery, Ltd., Edmonton, London..

The tanks are 27 ft. long overall, 6 ft. in diameter and served by access catwalks and four inspection manholes in the top. The Dyson 50-ton semi-trailer carrying the tank is designed for use with a Scammell 6 x 6 tractor.

Tank filling is by vacuum and discharge by compressed air. A reciprocating compressor and a Perkins S6 oil engine are carried on the raised front deck of the semi-trailer. These units deliver air under pressure at 30 p.s.i. either to the tank to assist the discharge of the contents, or through an ejector system which creates a vacuum in the tank. An automatic vacuum breaker is provided and the necessary hoses are on the cat-walks.

The massive s e m 1trailer is of droppedframe construction, the tank lying between the raised catwalks' on each side. It is equipped with heavy hydraulic landing gear able to support and raise the front end when fully laden. A full-width landing p a 11 prevents sinking when uncoupled on soft ground.

A tandem axle rear bogie is employed, the two axles being rubbermounted on solid-pivoted walking beams. The tyres are twin 14.00-24 (20-ply) n28 Dunlop• Power Rib pneumatics. The brakes, which are actuated by a two-line air-pressure system from the prime mover, are 151in by 7 in. two-leadingshoe Girlings with mechanical hand parking control at the side of the semi-trailer.

Another interesting tanker, claimed to be the largest of its type in the world, has been introduced by British Oxygen Gases, Ltd., to carry more than 300,000 Cu. ft. of liquid oxygen. It was built to the special requirements of the company by Scamrnell Lorries, Ltd.

The A.P.V. cylindrical tank, carrying oxygen in liquid form at —186° C., has a pressure-raising coil enabling the gas to be discharged. in approximately an hour. The 24-ton articulated tanker has a payload capacity of approximately" 13 tons and is powered by a Leyland 11.1-litre six-cylindercd engine. The overall length is 32 ft. 6 in. and width 7 ft. 101 in.

The new vehicle is to go into service in Yorkshire. It will be joined by five similar tankers later in the year.
