ENVIRONMENTAL controls on haulage operating centres should be extended to Northern Ireland, according to the Northern Ireland Road Transport Association.
It wants the Department of the Environment (NI) to use the new British controls to restrict the entry of "kerbside" hauliers into the industry, and has made representations to Northern Ireland Transport Minister Chris Patten.
RTA secretary Stanley Martin told CM:"We are looking for more tightening up on the issue of new licences. New operators are creating unfair competition by using public highways and farm gates as their operating bases."
