Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

THE entry of the Bristol company into the double-decker field is the most interesting feature to be considered in connection with Bristol products on show this year.

The new chassis which has been produced follows in its main details the design of the large single-decker chassis -which have already proved successful. It has to be remembered that this company is itself an important operator of public-service vehicles. One obvious result of this is the attention to points concerning maintenance, and especially that of accessibility to the main chassis components.

The double-decker chassis has a wheelbase of 16 ft. and an overall length within the 26-ft. limit, and the frame height amidships when under load is 1 ft. 9i ins., the height of the rear overhang, for the platform of the bus, being m ins. The measurement from the driver's bulkhead to the end of the frame is 21 ft. 2 ins., and the frame overhang is 7 ft. 4i ins.

This chassis has the company's large six-cylindered engine, developing 103 b.h.p. at the moderate speed of 2,000 r.p.m. It is a side-valve unit and, from our own experience, we can say that it has excellent flexibility and smoothness of running. The chassis is equipped 'with Dewandre vacuum servo brakes, D18 the hand brake operating upon the rear wheel. The road springs have the Bristol patent cam-type mounting, giving varying effective lengths according to the load imposed.

There will be an example of this Gtype chassis with a 48-seater bus body.

The new Bristol H-type long-wheelbase single-decker chassis (four-cylindered engine) is also to be seen. The wheelbase is 17 ft. 6 ins., which compares with 16 ft. in the case of the older fourcylindered B-type chassis. A body can be fitted providing accommodation for as many as 34 passengers. The sidevalve unit develops 70 b.h.p. at 2,000 r.p.m., and generally the vehicle constitutes a simple single-decker chassis for municipal or regular city-route work.

The six-cylindered single-decker chassis on display is the 1)-type shortwheelbase model. This has the same type of 103 b.h.p. engine as fitted in the (I-type double-decker referred to above.

This D-type chassis is exhibited complete with a 31-seater body having a main entrance on the near side at the front and an emergency door in the centre of the rear bulkhead. A point to be noted is that all these single-decker chassis are available with a final-drive ratio of either 5.4 to 1 or 6.5 to 1 at the choice of the purchaser. The standard ratio of the double-decker is 7.6 to 1.

Although it is not available for examination at Olympia, we may mention that the company has now introduced its J-type long-wheelbase six-cylinder chassis, designed on the same lines as the other single-deckers. This means to say that there are short-wheelbase and long-wheelbase single-decker chassis, and either can be obtained with a four-cylindered or a six-cylindered engine.

Visitors to this. stand should notice the new mounting of the brake vacuum cylinders (which are of Dewandre make) on the front wheels, of the latest single-decker chassis.— The Bristol Tramways and Carriage Co., Ltd.. Brislington, Bristol.
