• Slickness—in driving, organization and turnout—was the keynote at Speke on Sunday when the Liverpool LDOY round was held in bright sunshine at a venue provided by the Dunlop Co. Ltd. And 3,000 people turned up to watch.

Very popular champion, with the lowest score in the round's five-year history, was four-times finalist J. C. Kendrick, of Paraffin Distributing Co. Ltd., whose 34 penalty marks not only made him the champion driver and Class C winner, but also the best rigid tanker driver and, with R. Doran and F. Harrison, helped him to secure the best team award for their company. Prospects for his father's retirement look bleak since he had hoped to make his son a director and hand over the business. "I'll be back next year," champion Kendrick said after the presentation.

Due to recent industrial disputes many hauliers were noticeably absent, causing the total entry to drop by 28 to 107. However, this gave a chance for the organizers and marshals to show just how a competition should be run. Tests were run in duplication again and although only' 21 competitors had been through by lunch all vehicles had completed them by 3.20 p.m. and the control room had all the results posted 20 minutes later. Turnout of most vehicles was excellent and the standard of driving high, particularly in Class H where the winner, K. Smith, lost only 46+ points.

It was a day for the regulars with last year's winners in four classes retaining their titles: L. Price in Class A, S. Harrison in B, J. C. Kendrick in C, and V. Whiteside in E (1).

Unfortunately, one well-known driver, J.

C. Martindale of Tate and Lyle Transport Ltd., had to be taken to hospital after a heart attack just a few minutes after he had driven into third place in Class C. Both his award and the Class E (2) Trophy won by J. J. Kelly, were accepted by a colleague since Kelly had gone immediately to the hospital.
