• Sussex-based Nature's Way Logistics and sister company Heyland Haulage have had their Operator's Licences revoked after they went into receivership owing subcontractors thousands of pounds (CM 30 Jan-6 Feb 2002).

The Chichester-based companies had been called before the South East and Metropolitan Traffic Commissioner Christopher Heaps at an Eastbourne Public Inquiry.

Evidence was heard that Nature's Way Logistics and Heyland Haulage had estimated defciencles, at the time when administrators Smith & Williamson were appointed in January, of £1.1m and £1.8m respectively.

The firms, which specialised in transporting farm produce to regional distribution centres for supermarkets, had used a large number of subcontractors alongside its own vehicles. Many of these subbies hadn't received payment for up to six months when Nature's Way went into receivership.

The Tc has also disqualified indefinitely the directors, Mornington Stafford Seager and Christopher Baker, from holding an 0-licence or being involved as a director or majority shareholder in any company operating goods vehicles.

One former subbie, Kevin Thomas from KG Thomas International, says that he is pleased that it has lost its licence but that it will not help him. "I managed to cut costs to

keep the business afloat. However, lam still owed £70,000 that I will never see again."

Alan Knight who supplied the firms' fuel agrees that it is good news. He was lucky to be able to recuperate some of the £15,000 he was owed from their bulk tank.

A spokesperson for Nature's Way declined to comment.

Seager has previously been involved in two liquidated road transport firms: Top Contracts, previously known as Heyland Haulage, and Wheatagrove.

Seager's wife Patricia and son Mark are also directors of another haulage firm, Tabline.
