• Complaints have been made to Newcastle upon Tyne Corporation transport department that drivers and conductors who turned up late for work in the New Year holidays were turned away, despite the fact that buses were standing idle. Mr. W. Gilroy. schedules officer with the TGWU, claimed that some employees had walked several miles to work in the early morning and had arrived after the 6 a.m. starting time. The majority of them were sent home although 45 buses were standing idle.
Mr. V. Joyce, local chairman of the TGWU, said that at Byker depot 45 conductors and 31 drivers failed to arrive at all. There was a considerable surplus of drivers over conductors. Cllr. N. Trotter, chairman of the transport committee, commented that as there had been a shortage of conductors at the time, this had been the reason for sending drivers home.
