rORMED in 1939 by the meat carriers .1. constituting the Wholesale Meat Transport Association, to meet the country's war-time needs in connection with the road transport of meat, the Meat Transport Pool was taken over by the M.O.W.T. in 1941.

Even when the R.H.O. came to an end in August, 1946, the meat section was continued to permit the industry to take over the necessary organization. Tli transfer to the industry has now been effected, and the first meeting of the board of directors was held on December 30.

Mr. P J. R. Tapp, the first chairman of the W.M.T.A. and chief road haulage officer in the Ministry, was elected chairman, and Messrs. Guy T. M. Fairclough, H. Elliott and W. Stanley, vice-chairmen. Mr. H. F. Minter, deputy road haulage officer in the Ministry, was appointed managing director, and Mr. F. R. Aldhous general manager.

The following are members of the first board of directors: Messrs. H. D. Gallagher, H. J. C. Maile, C. IL Matthews, G W. Quick Smith, E. J. Stevens, H. W. Tidd. A. W. Darby, G. J. White, and F. D. Wright.

The board approved the contract with the Ministry under which, for a minimum period of two years. the Pool will act as the agent of the Minister for the transport by road of meat and livestock throughout Great Britain.

The Meat Transport Pool is regarded as a model of co-operative enterprise, and it is satisfactory that the industry has once again been entrusted with the responsibility of operating it.
