APUBLIC offer has been made by a Blyth bus proprietor to meet representatives of local co-operative societies to consider a scheme whereby co-operative-society members can obtain a dividend on their road travel.

The proposal in Northumberland follows the successful introduction of a scheme by the International Express Services, Ltd., in conjunction with two co-operative societies in the Sheffield and Mansfield area. By that scheme the conductors on the buses are provided with check books for recording the fares of members of the societies involved. In paying his fare the member is required to give his check number and at the end of a certain period returns are submitted by the company to societies.

Negotiations Opened Following an Offer Made by a Bus-service Operator in the North

The members are thereupon Credited with whatever dividend is payable by the society. This new facility is of immediate interest to the north where, in the northern section of the Co-operative Union, it is estimated that there aru at least two million people directly connected with the movement.

The offer to meet representatives of any of the local societies in order that the scheme might be considered has been made_by Mr. T. H. Allen, who is chairman of the Northern Road Transport Owners' Association, Ltd., and a director of the firm of Messrs. T. Allen and Sons. The firm operates buses on local services covering the greater part of industrial Northumberland, where the co-operative movement is firmly established, in addition.to a longdistance daily service between NeWcastle and Aberdeen.

Following upon the announcement of Mr. Allen's offer, negotiations have been opened with the Blyth Co-operative Society, which has a membership of nearly 10,000. On the present dividend payableby the society, a return journey between Blyth and Newcastle would cost approximately is. 1d. as compared with the is. 3d. fare charged by the concern, and the Is. 6d. fare charged by another operator.

In conversation with a representative of The Commercial Motor an official of

the society -said: "On the face of it, and in the absence of further particulars, 1 am of the opinion that, providing a *suitable arrangement can be made, it Is a scheme which should be acceptable to the members."

The question is to come before an • early meeting of the society's management committee. •
